Hi All,
I just had an interesting call from my council exe. I am putting on an Aviation Day at Mojave Airport (Spaceport) in Nov. It started out as a small event in Aug. Now I have almost every company and Patron at the airport wanting to be involved in this. I have more a/c than I know what to do with.
The call was about the flying portion of the event. I had arranged to have the Young Eagles and some other Test pilots from the National Test Pilot School come and give as many free flight as we could do in a day.
Well National Risk Management asked me to reconsider do to statisics. They told me that the statisics indicate that someone could get injured in the amount of flying that I have set up. I had planned to get in at least 100 scouts to fly. My scout exe felt the same. I explained that everything I had done to this point was right out of the G2SS. They agreed, but still asked if I would consider canceling the flying.
Well, long story short, I have canceled the flying.
I just find it ridiculous that just because I intended to fly that many kids that it would lead to an accident and a scout injured. I have been working a/c for 34 years and haven't seen proof of that figure.

Sounds like you have a fantastic event planned! I think your ideas about the free flights are great! A group of scouts for our troop took aviation MB at a local airport and they got to fly...(of course the parents had to sign off that this was ok) I think the council exec. is trying to protect himself, the council and probably you too! Although you could countinue the free flights you probably made a good decision to cancel them.
Perhaps there is something else special you could do? in lieu of the flying.
I wonder if you could schedule the free flight portion at later dates that way not all of them would be happening on the same day? just an idea!

If we stopped kids from doing something because there was some risk that someone might maybe get hurt we wouldn't take them hiking, camping swimming or anything else.
YOu can get killed walking down the steps at home. Kids die playing football, soccer, and track. Ok so what do we do. Put them in padded cages so there is no chance of getting hurt.
If they want to look at stats then there are more people injured and killed in their own homes than anywhere else.
On the other side of that. We are not living in a society that everyone wants to sue. And it doesn't matter what it is about.
I agree. Someone is a pencil pusher that is scared of their own shadow.
Have your event. If sounds wonderful and very educational for the boys.
HAVE FUN
