My troop has been going to the same summer camp since before I
joined. While I have no problems with the camp, I was thinking
of looking for another option for camp. I live in Kentucky, so
camps not too far away from the Ohio Valley area would be
prime. Any suggestions?

Have you thought about Skymont? Very nice facilities and good
staff. We went there this year and had a great time.

Here is their URL:

Good luck. Let us know if you find others to look at.

Sometimes its good to go to the same camp though. We've gone
to Camp Conestoga every year I was in the troop and I wouldnt
have it any other way.

I can certainly understand enjoying some camps well enough to
go back year after year. There is comfort in familiarity.

Visiting camps other than home does open up some really neat
doors too. In the last 3 years we have gone to camp in
Alabama, North Carolina and Tennessee. Next year we will go to
Seabase and the younger boys will camp in the Keys too--some
will be going to Jamboree as contingent members and staff.
We're already making plans to go to Colorado in 2006

I've found that keeping a varied program keeps interest
high--if you build it they will come. We go to our local camp
all year round, in our case change is welcome. Oh, and first
year campers enjoy the adventure too--we took 16 FYCs with us
to Tennessee. They had a ball doing things we can't do here in
Florida.

Above all, the enjoyment of anyplace you spend camp is
directly related to attitude. Keep a good one, and you to may
find the pony.

Have you tried looking at neighboring councils? We go not only
to our councils camp (Greater Western Reserve), but also to
Greater Cleveland Councils camp. We alternate years so that we
dont get to used to one camp.

Every year our camp has troops from Delaware,Va. and OH come
for a week of camp. Troops in our council also visit other
camps. But the problem comes up when a troop NEVER goes to
their own council camp but always else where. If a troop wants
to try another camp that is fine BUT they should also support
their own camp. I always felt 1 out of three years away if
they want to be a traveling troop.

Many troops tend to have a favorite camp and there's nothing
wrong with that as long as going to that camp continues to
serve your troop well. One thing I've found that works pretty
good is going to your favorite camp every second year and then
on the inbetween years find something new and different.

we have been going to camp crooked creek in KY for the last 4
years it has served our troop well considering we have had the
largest troop there at camp for most of the years. our council
camp we had a problem with staff bribing kids with sighn offs
if they would bring them a pop or two. but that was before i
joined the troop. we have great leadership in our troop and
finally after many years I will attend Woodbadge this fall.

I think it is very important tor look at the program that the
camp offers.
We attended the Bear Lake Aquatics Base in Laketown Utah,
their MB classes are the most structured that I have seen in
the Great Salt Lake Council Camps.
They schedule all the classes at a specific time instead of
running an open program. Everyone know where they are supposed
to be and when, more importantly, as a leader I know where
every one is at any givien time.
We tried the other camps in our council, but bear lake is the
one that give us every thing, good schedule, huge waterfront,
good classes, and of course dining hall.
I dont think there is a problem with going to the same camp
each year, if the camp is enjoyable every time you go, thats
whats important.

This summer our troop went to our council camp: Sinoquipe
Scout Reservation located in South Central Pennsylvania This
year t here was a troop there from Cincinatti, OH. They had a
charter bus bring them. Mostly the Troops are from the
National Capitol Area Council and The Mason-Dixon Council and
The Baltimore Area Council and other surrounding councils.

They have alway's offered a top-notch program every year that
I've been there.

Our Council has two camps, and one of them is 86 years old and
has a reputation as one of the best in the country. Even with
that, the boys say that they don't want to go to Camp Parsons
every year. We've fallen into a pattern of going to Parsons
every other year, then an out-of-Council camp (there are a lot
of good ones in the Northwest) the other years.

We have a problem now that our Council opened Camp Pigott last
year. We don't want to cut down on our Parsons visists, but we
liked Pigott, too. Some of us are thinking of attending two
summer camps ins tead of one each summer. Anyone else try
this?

Two camps in one summer is great if you have a lot of leaders
willing to give up their vacation time for scouts. I think it
is more than enough that they are willing to give up a week of
their vacation time to attend camp. I imagine most people get
two weeks off...they should at least spend one with their
family.

However, if you have plenty of leaders then two is a great
idea and may encourage more scouts to attend! There are always
a few scouts that have conflicting activities so an additional
week to select from may give them the option to attend camp
they didn't have before.
