Board of reviews and Scoutmaster conf

Postby JVCXXVI » Fri Nov 17, 2006 12:50 pm

I'm wondering if you guys ever have the same scout do more then one board of review and scoutmaster conf in the same night. I have a scout wanting to do the meetings for Tenderfoot and Second Class in the same evening. Is there a problem with that?

No problem at all. Been there, done that. Perfectly permissible, and quite appropriate. I assume the Scout had everything done for 2nd class, but was missing one item for Tenderfoot.

My troop doesn't do that. We wait one week. It only comes up once every 3-4 years.

We will do this. I will do the SM Conference for the first rank a few days before the BOR. Have the BOR for the first rank. Then I will meet with the young man and bring him back to the BOR. Will do my best to work with the Advancement Chair to have different adults sit on the second BOR.

It works and keeps the young men energized about scouting.

My troop would let it happen, but the scouts in my troop just don't care about advancing and I refuse to open the mb book or scout handbook for them. This is a good thing because it shows that with hard work you can achieve the things you want and it helps to keep enrolled up.

This is an artificial requirement that you place on your scouts. I had a scout committee that tried to add "requirements" for rank advancement. After explaining that it wasn't fair to the boys and they didn't have the right to change the official BSA requirements, things went a lot easier. The scouts were happier.

Making the scouts wait a week is a trivial issue. However, in my unit, I'm sure they started with a trivial issue that grew. Then, when I was put in as Scoutmaster, there were problems. Scouts got "turned off" of scouting. Don't let something like that happen.

We schedule our SMCs and BORs every month. It gives our Scouts practicce meeting deadlines, our CC time to gather a BOR. Waiting a month for a 2nd BOR is definitely a no go.
