Kitchen sink

Postby riverwalk » Tue Jan 02, 2007 11:36 pm

Why not the sink, haha. Hopefully you'll get some good advice. By the way, he's already in the BSA, but I know you meant when he graduates into Boy Scouts.

He should already be learning from leaders (apparently learned those this way) how to pack. He'll learn, as Scouts are not left on their own.

By the way, I've used a leader's chaise lounge for a litter. He didn't know that's why he brought it, but I commandeered it for that, haha.

We have Scouts bring camp chairs with them all the time. I prefer a stadium chair that I had purchased for Jambo though-- it's lighter and nobody else tries sitting in it :D

It depends on the camping trip. As long as it is not hiking where he should be packing light what difference does it make.

He will modify his gear on campouts once he joins a troop and gains a little more experience, plus some feedback from his peers. Got to admire his enthusiasm though.

just tell him the truth about what he should and should not pack on different type of trips. he's young and (hopefully) trying to learn what to do. One of your troops SI's and/or TG's should work with him and the scouts that he joins with to make sure they learn that what he packed isn't acceptable on each trip. make sure he knows where all that info is located in the scouting publications, too (handbook, mb book, field guide, etc....). since he's in cub scouts now you should be preparing him for what is to come in boy scouts, just dont hide the truth or you'll loose his trust and he'll leave, which we know isnt what we want to happen...

Waht always works best is to have a troop generated packing list for camping and other outings. This will aid the parents and scouts in understanding what is necessary for the trip. By exclusion (and they usually get it) they will understand what is not necessary.

Most of our boys bring chairs when we troop camp or do Camporee's. I always bring one. Sorry but this 60 year old bum hip simply doesn't do well getting up off the ground, same thing with a good quality cot. When they backpack, canoe or hike they don't.
I figure I have slept on the ground enough I have earned a cot.

Same here. For me, it's not the getting up and down, it's the (almost always) damp ground that I want to avoid.

I do, however, still sleep on the ground.

Last time I slept on the ground, with one of the new ground pads, the next morning it took me 30 minutes to get up. To many years of getting thrown off horses and landing on my behind.

most of our boys bring lawn chairs, if the campout is appropriate. even the adults generally bring them. sure beats sitting on a rotten log or a soaking wet stump.

Most places we camp have a supply of picnic tables to sit at. So I don't usually bring a lawn chair. But I certainly respect anyones right to bring one as long as they take care of it.

Weblo packs lawn chair on campout

Postby jhawk » Thu Jan 25, 2007 2:44 pm

He can bring the Lazyboy out of the living room for all I care. if it is a campout with reasonable distance from a vehicle and he wants to be comfy, so what? We always bring camp chairs when we campout with the trailer or several vehicles. We sit around the fire or whatever to talk. We always take chairs to summer camp. They are more comfortable than a rock or log or the ground and you get fewer chiggers and ticks. obviously, you wouldn't want him packing stuff like that on a backpacking trip, but it was just a campout, right? I'm okay with him sitting in a chaise lounge, battery-operated fan hat turned on full blast, sipping a cool drink if that's what he wants to do. How is that hurting anything?

I agree. If he wants to carry it and be responsible for it then there is nothing wrong with it.

You should congratulate him for being well prepared and comfortable as a result.

Who cares what kind of chair he brings as long as there is room to transport it and he is willing to carry it to the campsite?

this would be allright as long as ample space is available for transporting and storing. if you need to cut down on weight, or bulk of things being transported, then maybe it would be appropriate to ask the young scout to bring a collapsable camp chair.
