looking for a camp with waterskiing MB

Postby jhawk » Wed Jan 31, 2007 3:53 pm

Does anyone have a recommendation for a summer camp with the waterskiing MB? I am looking for a camp for possible attendance in 2007 as provisionals for my son and myself in mid to late July or early August anywhere in the US.
Thanks!

Woodruff (Atlanta Council) has water skiing. It is a popular merit badge & classes fills up quickly. Here is a link to the AAC website Look under camping for information. http://www.atlantabsa.org/

I attended this camp as a youth, and as a staffer, from '76 to '81. I've been back several times in recent years, too. I can assure you, you will not be disappointed...

Camp Grimes, aka Mecklenburg Scout Reservation... http://www.campgrimes.org

    • Camp Grimes is located on 1115 acres in the foothills of the South Mountains near Marion, North Carolina. The camp hosts year round activities including the Nationally Accredited Boy Scout Resident Camping program during the summer. The natural location of Camp Grimes provides a perfect setting for camping and activities.

    • Trails surrounding the Reservation provide excellent hiking and mountain biking.
    • Beautiful Lake Calhoun provides ample aquatics activities including sailing, motorboating, water-skiing, canoeing, rowing, kayaking, tubing, and swimming. And, don't forget your fishing pole, as the lake is also famous for its bass fishing.
    • A Frontier area lets you sample pioneer life in the 1800's with an old log cabin, smokehouse, grist mill, blacksmith shop. Experience one of a kind programs such a arrowhead making, candle making, and soap making. Pan for gold in the clear stream that flows nearby. Learn to grind your own corn and make hocakes or use the hammer and anvil for metalworking in the blacksmith shop.
    • A high ropes course along with a rock climbing and rapelling tower add a high adventure element for older youth.
    • Seperate Shotgun, rifle and archery ranges provide shooting sports programs.
    • An Ecology area allows youth to experience nature and enjoy the indigenous flora and fauna tucked away in a secluded site on the camp.
    • Scoutcraft skills, camping instruction, wilderness survival, and pioneering skills are taught at the spacious Scoutcraft area.
    • An orienteering course is available for beginning map readers and experts alike.
    • There is even an indoor planetarium that will teach Scouts to identify the constellations they can see in the night skies of Camp Grimes.
    • A beautiful dining hall, 13 campsites, an adult shower house, two youth shower houses (with hot showers), trading post, health lodge, and office provide ample facilities to complement the programs.
    • A chapel area is the site of religious services (a Scout is reverent), but, allows a place of solitude when a Scout needs to take time for a quiet reflection.

It's offered where my troop is going this summer, Camp Constantin on Possum Kingdom Lake (real name) west of Fort Worth, Texas.

I googled "Merit Badge" "Summer camp" "water skiing" and got over 1,100 hits. One on Chesapeake Bay sounded neat.

Great Salt Lake Council's Bear Lake Aquatics base in Utah.

I'm not sure if they actually teach the Water skiing merit badge, but they do have a ski boat for the scouts to use.

Other cool classes offered:
PADI certification for Scuba diving...for adults and scouts.
Aviation merit badge (the boys get to fly in a plane).
    Rappelling
    Shotgun/Trap shooting
    Ice cave exploring
    Small boat sailing
    Horseback riding
    Overnight Canoe Trek

The camp is on the shore of beautiful Bear Lake.

My scouts LOVED it.

Yep, Constantin is a Circle Ten Council property, yet located elsewhere. But it's water related activities are popular.

Bear Lake Aquatics Base is a great camp, and my boys loved it too.

They do have a skiing boat, but generally don't offer the MB. They simply don't have time for boys to practice enough to be able to ski as well as required for the badge. The week we were there last year, the ski boat had something broken, and was awaiting repairs. It sat unused all week. If your boys really want the MB, they will need to practice before camp to get their skills up. The other option is to bring or rent a boat for your troop.

They teach Rowing, Canoeing, Small Boat Sailing, Swimming, and Lifesaving MBs on the waterfront, as well as swimming lessons, BSA Lifeguard, and Mile Swim.
On years when the water level is high enough to launch the big boats they have 2 big sailboats (for your whole troop at once.) They also have catamarans.

Some of the other programs mentioned above (shotguns, horses, aviation, etc.) have age limits, prerequisites, and/or additional fees. The popular activities are just too busy to get everyone.

Camp Onway, Located in rustic Raymond, New Hampshire, on the beautiful Onway Lake. Camp Onway has been serving scouts since 1929. Along with a long and interesting history, the camp offers an unmatched aquatics program, including waterskiing, motor boating, swimming, lifesaving, rowing, canoeing, small boat sailing, BSA snorkeling, BSA kayaking, and BSA Lifeguard. The staff is well qualified, and will put in the time and effort to ensure that anyone who wants a merit badge earns one.
