We finished our Klondike derby...
Over night the temperature went below 0. Since, that was expected ALL of the scouts were prepared and slept warmly. Some were uncomfortably too warm.
They all had fun!
On these winter camps I try to do the food so that there is as little "clean-up" as possible. Most everything can be thrown away. Other camps, I make the scouts use their "mess kits". But when it is really cold, I don't want the scouts having to wash dishes.
I'm thinking next year this will be the menu:
Breakfast...Omlettes:
Each scout/leader has a ziploc baggie that has bits of ham, cheese, cooked bacon, etc. in it. In the morning, two eggs are added. Mix a little then float the baggies in boiling water till the eggs are cooked. Have another pot with hot water for some hot chocolate. Maybe even some Orange Juice. The only thing to clean is the two pots of water.
Lunch...Taco Salad
Bring some pre-cooked taco meat. At the derby, heat up the taco meat. You can put the taco meat in zip-loc baggies and boil it to heat it. Each scout/leader will have an individual bag of Doritos (or similar) chips. Cut the top of the bag so it is like a cup and break the chips into "spoon-sized" pieces. Add some taco meat, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, taco sauce, sour cream, etc. Then just eat it out of the bag. Have extra bags of Doritos for seconds...Again, very little clean up.
