Save Camp Onway

Postby cochichewick » Wed Feb 21, 2007 1:21 pm

Hello All,

Camp Onway, a Boy Scout camp that has been in operation since 1929 as part of the Yankee Clipper Council, is about to be sold. This is wrong and detrimental to the scouting program! I ask that you visit http://www.savecamponway.com and sign the petition to save the camp. The Yankee Clipper Council’s executive board is planning to vote on selling the camp on March 22. Please help us preserve a scouting treasure for our council. You can also email your Name to Matt_Augeri@comcast.net and tell him to add it to the petition. Please help us in our endeavor to save a beloved camp. Thanks!!

cochichewick,

First, welcome to the board. Second, in response to your posting here, I reviewed both alternative proposals, 'A' and 'B'... Very, very impressive... and definitely worth fighting for. I commend you for your efforts and thank you for letting us know. Please, keep us informed.

All Users,

Please take the time to investigate cochichewick's petition plea. I urge you all to sign their Petition.

A few questions......

1. Why are they selling the camp?

2. Is it because you have simply outgrown it?

3. Is the Council planning on a new camp to be built in it's stead?

Some answers from a troop committee member...

This has been discussed at my committee meetings (as it has at all committee meetings, I am sure.)

Out of the blue, an offer was made from a religious group to buy the camp at x amount of $.

Until this time, selling was not being considered.

As a council, we have not outgrown the camp. As a matter of fact, it seems to be "just right" in many aspects, including year round usage and just enough summer space, including provisional troop weeks.

The council is not planning on building a new camp. Nor have I seen or heard plans about sprucing up any of the other camps.

We are talking PRIME wooded area here on a beauthiful lake. This all seems like a knee-jerk reaction to get some quick cash without any long term planning. If the council needs money, then I get the need to sell some property. BUT at least have the business sense to really look at projected needs, and DO NOT TAKE THE FIRST UNSOLICITED OFFER that comes along!

Can you tell that we are all very passionate about saving Onway? :(
