Our boys attended a meeting before the weeklong session to get them ready and tell them what to bring, etc.

The organizers should be giving you any information you might need. Don't be afraid to call them asn ask questions.

Yes!

Go, participate, enjoy, learn!

As far as what to bring - you should be advised. In our Council the registered attendees receive a letter with details about 3 weeks before the course. The letter tells them all they need to know -- PROVIDED you read it and pay attention.

I know that we have had some boys admit that they didn't read it. Some that said they read it, but you couldn't tell it from what they brought. And some that just ignored parts of it.

Your Council may do it differently, but they should still be giving you the info that you need.

Please let us know your thoughts when you return.

WVBeaver05 has it right. Be sure that you PARTICIPATE. I know that with participation in all aspects (presentations, patrol and troop activities, evaluations--sometimes called reflections--etc...) the fun and learning will definitely follow.

Most NYLT courses provide their participants with 2 shirts and a hat to wear for the duration of the course. Also, the typical course requires Class A uniform for about 50% of the course. So my recommendation would be enough parts to your Class A uniform to last for the course, the typical personal items (toiletries, boxers, etc...), appropriate sleeping materials, and anything else you typically bring on a camping trip. Some courses provide participants with plates and utensils for eating meals, and some don't. I know that my course does not, so you may need a mess kit and utensils.

Your council's course probably will send you a checklist with recommended materials. Also, some courses have a meeting for you, your parents and/or scoutmaster prior to your course (similar to the JLTC preconference orientation meeting) to help you with problems like these. You can also ask somebody in your troop who has gone previously to see what they would recommend.

As far as prepare, be sure to be fully rested before you get to course. Most days are long and you usually have very little free time. Also, if your council has sent staffers out to NJLIC in the past, I can guarantee that you will be singing lots and lots of songs, so be sure to have a strong voice with you.

Judging by the fact that you said March and April for your course dates, I can relatively safely assume that your from the North East Region. JOOC, Which council? If by chance I know the council and I might be able to help you out more (with out giving away anything important to you ;) ).

One final word of advice I can give you is this:
At NYLT, the staffers usually sing, act crazy and are very enthusiastic about the course, but aren't embarrassed. Be the same way. What happens at NYLT, stays at NYLT. You may be worried about being called a loser or something like that, but it will not happen. Just have fun!!

I have not been too up to date with the new NYLT courses.

I took the JLTC course before the NYLT course came out.(I was asked to staff it the last two years but due to other conflicts I have been unable to)

Has the course dramatically changed, or has it remained relatively the same? I remember taking JLTC and I learned so much from it, I have to credit that with some of my successes within my troop.
