As far as your classes and merit badge requirements go, it would be best for you to take a look at the current merit badge requirements fot things that seem related to your classes.

The specifics of what is covered and how it is done vary significantly from teacher to teacher, much less from school to school or state to state.

My son earned the graphics badge based on what he did in a graphic design class and probably got most of photography too had he been inclined to pursue it. He did much of Personal Fitness in a team sports and fitness gym class.

I don't recall of the top of my head what water requirements are for second class beyond the actual swim test. Clearly that one requires a pool or other swimming location.

No, you don't have to use a pool or it would say so. You can throw lines or objects from a dock or shoreline or a boat. Lots of boys do this one on a dock at summer camp. You can do it at a pool, though.
As far as badges go, take a look at Farm Mechanics, Astronomy, Nuclear Science, Personal Fitness, Public Health, Computers, Plant Science....
You found this site--have you looked at the pages with the requirements for all the badges? Browse through them and compare what you are learning and doing with the requirements yourself. Keep in mind that a counselor may or may not accept what you have already done in a class but if you paid attention you should be able to replicate your work with little effort to meet requirements.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought that passing the swim test was a requirement for First Class.....NOT, Second Class.

I'll have to double-check the book

There is a swim test for both first and second class. The first class test requires a little more. If a boy knows how to swim, we run him through the first class test and sign for both since he can clearly do the second class swim if he can do the longer first class test.

Perhaps that's why I overlooked it.....we do generally the same thing....going to summer camp really helps to facilitate because passing the swim test is one of the first things that get's done.....and you're right, we do the same thing, once they pass the one for the first class, we sign off on both....

Thanks for the clarity,

If you have some boys who need to pass the swimming requirements to advance in rank and the local pool has ice on it, call your local YMCA. Ours lets boy scouts come (with prior notice) at opening time on Sunday. They don't want you doing the whole MB, but line rescues and the BSA swim test are okay, and you can be out in 15 minutes.
