Southern New England Backpacking Suggestions

Postby vpalango » Mon Feb 26, 2007 2:40 pm

We're taking our older scouts backpacking in April. I will be splitting the group into group (a) backpackers, and (b) non-backpackers. I'm looking for a site where:

1) Group A can hike in a short way, and set up a quick overnight campsite.

2) Group A can hike on Saturday to...

3) A site where group B has set up camp on Friday night

and then

4) Group A can set an example on comming into camp with backpacks, setting up a backpack camp, and cooking dinner on backpacking stoves.

Does anyone have any good suggestions on where we can do a setup like this one in Southern NE. (We are in Wrentham, MA)

I know it's not very local for you, but it will meet your needs...Camp Potomac in Western Maryland is about a mile off the C & O Canal trail which runs from Cumberland, MD to Washington DC----what's really cool too, they just finished the Allegheny Highlands Trail from Cumberland to Pittsburgh, so, technically speaking, a person could hike/bike all the way from DC to Pittsburgh, but, I digress.....

....this location would meet your needs for both hikers and non-hikers, plus, being a BSA camp, it should have what you're looking for. It's located about 2 1/2 - 3 hours west of Baltimore not too far off of I-68.

For more info, call the council service center at (301) 729-1300. Or e-mail them at bsapotom@hereintown.net or go to www.potomaccouncilbsa.org

Thanks for the suggestion, but the long drive won't work from a logistical perspective for us on this one.
