Awards for recruiting a new boy

Postby Mrw » Tue Mar 27, 2007 12:39 pm

I have a boy who has definitely recruited a new friend to join the troop.

The question is this:

I know there is (or was?) a recruiter strip to be worn below the right pocket of the uniform shirt. Our council has given us colorful round patches as awards for recruitment as well.

Which of these should I award to this boy? Or should I give him both?

Thanks in advance for any input on the subject.

Our council also has a round right-pocket recruiter patch (known as temporary insignia). The problem is that the right pocket is the home of virtually all temporary insignia.

You can place temporary insignia on the back of a merit badge sash too.

My 2005 version of the Insignia Guide shows the RECRUITER strip as "valid" and worn just below the right breast pocket.

To answer your question...IMHO I'd give the boy BOTH.
One for the uniform and the round patch for the back of the MB sash.

Recruiter

Here's the way it was represented to me recently. The round patch (very nice indeed), was for Scouters recruiting someone and the little strip patch was for Scouts. The round one is of course temporary, as already pointed out. We got our round one at District Committee, with the stipulation of honesty...return it if we didn't recruit someone, haha. Yeah, I lucked out and got another guy to volunteer his "hour a week", and I got a patch, woo-hoo!

If a District/Council is presenting both to the Scout, just remind them of the patch rules. And do Uniform inspections as well. In fact again tonight, I'm doing a Uniform/patch demo at one of my meetings.

Thanks guys!

I will present him with the strip for his uniform and the round one as a souvenir. When I went downtown and transferred 14 Webelos and also added two new boys last week, she counted out and handed me 16 of the round patches. I am also pretty sure we have a handful from last year too.

I don't know, maybe a colorful patch can help encourage the guys to bring new friends.

By all means, give him as many patches as you can. Each council tends to do things a little differently though.

Billiken is a whole two suburbs over from us, so I am not worrying about the council "policy" being different here.

The Recruiter Strip, BSA Item No. 00219, is a participation/acheivement award available to Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts and Boy Scouts. It is worn just below the right breast pocket. With that being said, this particular award is NOT authorized for Varsity Scouts, Venture Scouts, or (adult) Scouters. (If a Tiger Cubs BSA strip is also worn, the Recruiter Strip would be placed just below the Tiger Cubs BSA strip.)

http://usscouts.org/advance/boyscout/recruiter.html says, "There are NO formal requirements for these strips. Each Unit establishes the procedure for awarding the strip. Usually, a Recruiter Strip is awarded to a Cub Scout or Boy Scout the first time he is successful in getting a friend, relative, classmate, or other acquaintance to join his unit."

However, it wouldn't hurt to check with your district/council, just in case they have some kind of local award policy in place.

This same link (above) also shows the round 2002 Recruiter patch (as noted earlier... very nice, fully-embroidered) that came with as DVD, which was part of a national recruiting campaign. This award's placement would be centered on the right breast pocket (or on the back of the merit badge sash), as it was a temporary patch, and was available to Scouts and Scouters... if memory serves me correctly.
