Camp Stigwandish - Great Western Reserve Council - CLOSED

Postby Billiken » Mon Feb 12, 2007 5:46 pm

The Great Western Reserve Council BSA has closed Camp Stigwandish for the summer of 2007. The Ohio EPA notified the council that the wastewater/sewage treatment plant was not compliant with current regulations.
The fix is estimated at over $180,000.

There are a lot of experienced camp counselors scrambling to find new summer jobs.
If anyone can help these young men/women in the northern Ohio, western PA, or western NY area, please contact the GWRC at the number on the attachment.

How terrible a thing like this......there are plenty of summer camp programs in NE Ohio that need counselers so they just have to look around and (hopefully) they will find a position.

Having read the linked article, I'm either confused by their incomplete information, or about why camp is closed.

The article says they had to "...suspend the kitchen operation at Camp ...". To me, that doesn't mean camp can't go on, it simply means there is no cushy option where someone else does all your troop cooking.

I guess maybe the scout campers in that council don't know how to do their own cooking?

This would also mean they have no group cooking arrangements available for the camp staff as well as for campers.

It is probably better to panic early and allow plenty of time for people to make other arrangements rather than to find out in May that they can't make it work. At that point it might be too late for staff to find other summer jobs and for troops to find other summer camps that fit their schedule or distance from home requirements.

As mrw , (who, along with Billiken and me, is from the area) noted, Keep in mind that the kitchen and dining hall also serve the STAFF. They've got to eat, too, even if troops were cooking their own food. So without a kitchen, the camp can't operate a staffed program.

Also, as noted, Greater Cleveland Council has offered to serve the troops from Greater Western Reserve Council at Beaumont Reservation. Although owned and operated by Greater Cleveland Council, Beaumont is actually physically located in Greater Western Reserve Council. and in fact is more centrally located in that council than Stigwandish. To get to Beaumont, Cleveland troops drive on I-90 PAST the exit for Stigwandish, which is a much smaller camp.
