Square Knot for Summer Camp Staff

Postby Ridge Runner » Mon Jun 04, 2007 9:12 am

Would be nice to reconize the hard work that camp staffer perform, more so for our youths who spend their summer vacation working long hours for low pay.

Thoughts?

Knot?

Postby riverwalk » Mon Jun 04, 2007 10:54 am

Interesting idea? What is more likely, is asking one's Council to consider that. Councils sometimes recognize local knots, not authorized for National use.

But my input would be that if this is considered, the Staff achievements would be only part of the service to be recognized. Since Staffing is a paid activity, then it changes the way most would view any recognition. But it's a good topic for discussion. Good luck.

Now that is an awesome idea!!!

However, I would think that to earn this, you'd have to be on staff for the entire "period". Eg, six weeks, etc. You could also have the border colored in gold, silver (whatever) to signify staff at a BSA high-adventure base... just thinking out loud.

And would you have some sort of indicator for multiple summers?

My thinking. Different colors for the different sections of Camp......CIT's, Program, Scoutcraft, Nature, High Adventure, etc...

And instead of using the square knot, maybe the sheet bend would be the better choice for such a Knot. It's never been used, and the sheet bend as a knot that is used to join two ropes of different sizes seems to be more reflective of what a staff does by joining, or rather engaging the boy to the game of Scouting at the Council level.

Now that is thinking.

I would keep the colors simple to one design regardless of area. And use pin-on numerals to reflect how many years.

Great Ideas Now lets think about the cost of this. How much for each knot how much for each numeral? Council camps are all in a money crunch. SO we need to examine how many knots we would need to purchase to be cost effective? Our camp has like 60 staff members so do we buy only 60? or buy 500 ?

Many camps have "camp badges" which are sewed on to class A shirts. Each year a scout attends camp and completes the required requirements they are awarded a camp patch or a number segment which goes around the patch. (camp badge - first year, 2 - second year, 3 - third year, 4 - fourth year, v - fifth year and for each year after that). for camp staff, make a special segment for them using the same number segment as scout going to camp year afther year.

Order 5000 of each segment . Saying that your camp will stay open and that the camp staff will come back year after year.

just a thought

Great idea. Multiple year recognition would be neat too, but I can see the problem of trying to keep it cost effective.
