Keeping the Merit Badge Sash on the shoulder?

Postby Pinewood Momma » Sun Jun 10, 2007 9:41 pm

My son has a hard time keeping him Merit Badge Sash on his shoulder. I have noticed other boys in our troop with the same problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on keeping the Sash in its proper place?

to use another scouts method. and also since my son is nothing but a endless pit and almost 6ft tall and wormy. we have a seamstress in our troop check out the child and make a buttonhole on the top of the sash so that it will button to the top of the scout shirt. some scouts have it done and others dont.

Another option is to take a piece of material. A scrap left over from shortening the pants works well. Make a loop of fabric under the top of the sash. Unbuton the shoulder lopp from the shirt, slip it through the new sash loop and rebutton. This way you do not have to do anything to the sash that is obviously visible.

Mad Dog ~ I love that idea! We have boys using safety pins, but they show. I think I'll sew an embroidery thread loop on my lanky son's sash this afternoon so it stays on for Court of Honor tonight. (No "scraps of material from shortening pants" available from this 6'2" kid's pants!) Thank you.

Button loop

Postby ThunderingWind » Wed Jun 13, 2007 9:45 pm

The sash I purchased for my son at the Ozark Trails Council Scout Store has a thread button loop at the fold where the sash goes over the shoulder. This loop was braided thread just like the thread that made the edge of the sash.

And yes, it was an official BSA sash.

But I like the idea of BSA having the QuarterMaster and Supply Division putting in a button hole as an official change to the sash.

Wow, the button hole idea is great. I was going to suggest a safety pin, but this is a much better idea.

Keeping the sash on

Postby mom4-2eaglescouts » Thu Jun 28, 2007 1:17 pm

I used a simple snap to keep my son's sash on. I used a large one (bigger than 1/4".) It was a quick fix before a meeting because I had planned on putting on velcro, but it has never come unsnapped which surprises me, and I'm talking about 8 years total by my older son. The side of the snap that is attached to the shirt is not seen without the sash because it is sewn just above where the collar lays over it.

A loop for the tab is a great idea! I think a 3" one under the sash (for the shoulder tab to fit through) is brilliant!

I also like a smaller one on the edge of a sash that needs a button under the collar to get it secured. Both are good designs. You can make a sturdy knitted thread for this purpose easily (loop into a loop and continuing until it is long enough to do the job.)

Sashes get heavy on the front when the badges start adding up, and this increases the occurrence of the sash falling unless there is something to hold it in place.

I've seen buttonholes through the sash too, but because it puts a hole in the sash I didn't want to do that.

Velcro can be made to work too, but with this loop and tab option, why bother! There's several solutions and great on you to notice and try to help others!

Last, I HATE to see a shoulder tab loop over the sash. It's improper wear of the uniform.

I sew a small loop of elastic to the point on the top where it fits the boy. This way is will move more freely and is less prone to pull the button off the shirt.
