Postby hacimsaalk » Thu Jan 04, 2007 6:20 pm

as many of you know, next summer my troop is headed to ME. the high adventure scouts are going on a canoe trip to the Northern Stretches of Maine, on the Aroostook River. we would like to eat MRE's for supper. i am currently looking for good prices (under $75) on them.

thanks

micah

Check with your local army reserve center. They might donate some to your troop for the trip. It never hurts to ask.

MREs cost $7.95 at Army Commissaries. Military surplus stores charge even more.

Avoid beef mushroom and use the tabasco.
An MRE is days worth of food. It has about 2,000 calories and no fiber so it will keep you full for the day.

Wow!!! Check it out! Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) you ever wanted to know about MREs (military, civilian, foreign), but were afraid to ask...

:D I love Meals Rejected by Everyone. Has anyone tried the Winter Rations? A bunch of granola type stuff. Upped the water intake requirement for me by a bunch.

But hey, I got to play GI Joe in the snow!! :D

ok, I guess I will be the designated grump on this thread. I see nothing particulary scoutworthy about a menu laced with MREs. Having them around for emergent situations is a good idea but to plan to have them every day completely misses the point of the team building and fellowship created by preparing, cooking, eating and cleaning up together.

I'll join you. Our guys have taken them on backpack trips. They're way overpackaged, bulky, expensive, and very likely "expired". They make a lot of trash to pack out. I think the guys like the idea of "playing army".

gotta agree with you about the MRE's. Better to hit the Wal Mart. Lots of stuff on the shelves that can be turned into backpacking meals with no problem other then repacking to reduce trash carried into the backcountry.

Got to add a MAJOR caveat to using MRE's-the enclosed MRE heater.

1. It gets really hot
2. The gas produced is explosive (one of those old school steel gov't issure wastebaskets can be made to....well never mind...!)

At the least, I'd open the MRE's and get rid of the heaters. They really do generate a ton of trash as well.

well, i guess i have to disagreee with all of you.

1st- all ya gotta do is burn the plastic and paper off of them. pick out the aluminum in the mornign and ur on ur way.

2nd- they can be smooshed, crammed and pounded into any nook or cranny.

3rd- they are extrmly nutrious and make it easy to eatr without a lot of mess or dishes.

4th-the heaters are only explosive before u add the water. once water hits the heat pack, it is no longer explosive.

5th- ya put the heaters back in the box while they're cooking, to avoid burning urself. its kinda common sense.

not trying to start something, just pointing out my point of view.

You should not be burning plastic. For 1 is is not good for your health and 2 is it not good for the environment.
If it is not written down then it is not an official rule

well, for 1- neither is burning wood. and 2- burning wood and cool are just as bad. its better than the trach dump its gonna end up in otherwise.

plastic is garbage and should not be fuel for a fire. Carry In - Carry Out

it is far better to burn it than take it home, throw it in the trash and have it end up in a land fill.

at least if u burn the plastic off of it, you can recycle the aluminum and do something good for the environment.

and, if i pack it out, im gonna take it home and burn the plastic off anyhow. really doenst matter, its gonna happen one time or another

The gas (hydrogen, IIRC) is a byproduct of the water and heater granules. You can rate a chapter all of your own in the next G2SS (I did alot of stupid stuff with MRE heaters back in the day.)
