Wearing Old BSA Uniforms

Postby 9009scoutmaster » Fri Jul 06, 2007 3:17 pm

Several times a year such as during Summer Camp and Camporees I like to wear my old scout uniform that I has in the very early 80's before the new tan shirt uniforms came out. The main reason that I wear this uniform is because so may youth do not know that there was a differernt uniform in scoutings past and from the history of the scout uniform an how it has changed and how it is still the same.
The only differents in the patches on this uniform and my newer uniform are the following.
1. George H Lanier Council strip on uniform. The old George H. Lanier council is now the George H Lanier district inside the Chattahoochee Council.
2. OA lodge flap. Old uniform has Wehadkee Lodge flap from the George H. Lanier Council.
3. Assistant Scoutmaster patch instead of Scoutmaster patch.
4. Gold 50 year unit strip below unit number. Several years ago unit dropped.

The only part of new uniform which could be considered unofficial is that our unit number changed several years ago when the George H Lanier Council merged into the Chattahoochee Council. All unit number became 9000 numbers. example Troop/Pack 4 became Troop/Pack 9004. Our Troop and Pack number changed from 9 to 9009. Even though our official unit number is now 9009 no members of unit wears this number on their uniforms. The only time we refere to the 9009 number is on unit paper work to council. All other references to unit we use old unit number.

I know the old uniform is still an official BSA uniform, but what about with old patches that have been undated.
Unit number on uniform question will not be changed as long as I am SM because of unit history in our local community. As we have not had any negative feedback from local Council on unit number issue.

If you are looking for permission- I cannot give that since I am not in the uniform police  . Opinion? I like it. It a conversation starter & it is a bit of history. Also I am a bit old school most days.

My opinion is that it's OK to wear a uniform from the old days, as long as it is worn complete, and with no new parts mixed with old parts. If the old council merged, it should be acceptable to wear the community strip or CSP from the new council.

One would never wear for example, an old shirt with new pants. Or the old flat hat with the current uniform.

I think it would be pretty cool.

Probably best to try and keep everything as close to authentic as possible.

Myself, no way I could fit into my old scout uniform :)

I try to stay as close as I can with the old uniform. An example is that I have a pair of the old short pants but do not have the old socks with garders, so to stay in and Official Class A Uniform I wear a pair of the new style socks.
Also I do not believe that and old shirt with the new style pants is out of place. Reason, I have 2 of my scouts that are wearing tan shirts that are over 25 years old. The only way that you can tell the difference between these shirts and the tan scout shirt sold today is American Flag that is on the uniform. Shirts at that time did not include U.S. Flags as they do today.

The "new" uniform came out in 1980 and the shirt color changed from green to tan. A 25 year old tan shirt may be old, but is still the new style.

Neat idea. We discuss it here some, and it's OK. It is a neat thing to do for Scouting. Go for it, and don't worry about the numbers. :)

Our COR is a VERY young 78 and attends most camping events.

He has a solid wool BSA uniform shirt with metal buttons that he sometimes wears to winter-time events.

A very cool shirt (with current insignia, except shoulder tabs).

He estimates the shirt is over 40 years old as he was not a scout as a youth and got involved with his sons.

I have a pair of knee-high socks with garters and red tabs.
Wore them one day at camp this summer.
Great conversation starter.

I also have some knee highs, garters, and some green and some red dangle thingies. I like to wear them, and get people asking about them.

I have an Eagle Scout's Uniform from the 13th World Jamboree in Nippon, Japan; the one with the typhoon :P I love it so much. It's a lot different from our current one. I like the color a lot better than the tan.
