It depends on the project. Whatever it is, though, ask everyone who might be able to help and even some you don't expect will help. Keep asking until you get the funds/materials you need. A recent Eagle candidate in my troop told me that one hardware chain was much better than another, and a third was no help at all. I hesitate to mention which, because (a) it might be a regional or store manager issue and (2) you should find out for yourself.

If you have to use ever contact that you can. Troop, Unit commissioner, Church, neighbors, ect. Sometimes these contacts will help lead you to the right person that you need to talk too to get the suppies that you need.

My son is doing his right now. He is building a foot bridge and making safety improvements to an existing dock. These are being done for a Community College on their nature trail.

When we priced out the project, it came in around $1,200. We have petitioned several lumber yards and big box home improvement stores for assistance. Each contact is helping with something, some more than others. Also local pizza shops have agreed to provide lunch on each day of the project (2 shops - 1 for each day).

He has also gotten a promise from 2 local companies to assist with a cash donation to cover shortfalls. (One of them is the company I work for. And that promise came at our company picnic when he was talking with the CEO (Who is an Eagle Scout) in the dugout during the softball game.

One thing I will say is that cover all bases. Some companies may help, other companies may not, but you will be suprised where and in waht form the support may come. Ask everyone you know if they or someone they know would be willing to help.

A word of caution, be prepared to respond with exactly what you need when the answer is yes.

Best Wishes in Your Quest,
