Yup, just got a unit in January, I just have to figure out how to use it, and I'll be off and running, so to speak.

I have been using my GPS for planning and riding biking routes and for tracking our bike tour to use when I draw the rider maps.

In a year and a half, I don't think I have actually taken it hiking yet!

Agree, Geocaching is a great activity. We took a couple of weeks in Troop meetings to go over the GPS, compass, topographical maps, geocaching, and land navigation in general. We culminated it by doing a series of geocaches in our local area.

Scouts had a last, and all looked forward to the activity.

Besides Scouting, I have been geocaching with the family for about 2-3 years now.

Try it you'll like it!!

Geocaching is a great place to get rid of all those extra Summer Camp / Camporee patches.

GPS for Camp Orientation

Postby Billiken » Tue May 15, 2007 3:15 pm

Beaumont Scout Reservation, Greater Cleveland Council, uses GPS devices for orientation for new arrivals at summer camp. Coordinates for all the various program locations/areas are given along with a GPS device. The boys then enter the coordinates and the GPS device tells them which direction/distance to travel/go.

After finishing in one program area, they enter the next set of coordinates and off they go. The camp gives out different sequences of GPS coordinates so everyone is not at the same program area at the same time.

The camp also has a GPS-equipped telescope. The GPS device knows where the telescope is "planted" (on earth) along with time, direction and azimuth of the tube (at what star/object the telescope is pointed). A small computer screen then tells the user what object/constellation they are looking at. I don't know exactly how accurate it is.

Obviously, it was donated, like the hand-held GPS units.

Very fun! I did it at 05 Jambo. The prizes weren't too hot, but the Scouts had a great time.

I go out at least a couple times a week with the family, my 8 year old is very good at finding caches. This is a very enjoyable thing to do. I have been to some pretty cool places to include water falls and caves.
