Scouting's Sunrise ;Where will you be on 1 August 2007?

Anyone making any special plans for that day? My council has a fundraising cook out that day, but as far as I know ,not a word about the sunrise.

Wednesday, 1 August 2007 - The Dawn of a new Century for Scouting around the World. On 1 August 1907, Scouting’s Founder Robert Baden-Powell blew his kudu horn on Brownsea Island at 08:00 to open the world’s first Scout camp. Soon thereafter, Scouting began to quickly spread around the world and now exists in 216 countries and territories.

2007, the 100th anniversary of Scouting is an opportunity for us to demonstrate the unique value of Scouting to the world and to celebrate the achievements of 100 years of Scouting. However, the 100th anniversary must provide a platform for the development of Scouting and not only celebrate the past 100 years. 2007 is the dawn of a new century of Scouting. We should celebrate the future of Scouting and look to how we can improve it to meet the needs of even more young people, their families and communities and offer better and bigger Scouting worldwide. We must seize this moment and prepare well in advance to share our successes and achievements.

100 years to the day, on 1 August 2007, every Scout, from every WOSM country, will mark the Centenary and look to the past, present and, most importantly, the future of Scouting.

There is a document on the BSA site (http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/resources/18-240.pdf) giving some ideas for a celebration program, but I don't know of anyone who has mentioned planning one.

Cleveland council had a small celebration yesterday (Sat, July 28th) at the Council Service Center.

Personally, I'll be in Omaha, NE on a business trip this coming Wed, 1-Aug. At 8:00 a.m. I plan a personal moment of silence to say a prayer of thanks.

Westmoreland-Fayette Council BSA presented a Brownsea Program during each Parents night this Summer. The staff was dressed in Knickers etc and acted and sang the Brownsea songs etc. Something will be added each year leading up to our 100th on 2010.

I'm still trying on this last possible day, to get something done over at National! It's strange to be such an OK, whatever, event? I'm on Duty tomorrow, but might go stand at the front of the building (early) or something, haha. Hmmm, maybe I should salute for the cameras there?

Starting next year, at least 3 Countries will celebrate their 100th, and after that a lot of other will follow, but to me, celebrating the Countries 100, and not Celebrating the Worlds 100, its like forgetting the 4 of July and making a big deal on the anniversary that your state or town was founded

... but to me, celebrating the Countries 100, and not Celebrating the Worlds 100, its like forgetting the 4 of July and making a big deal on the anniversary that your state or town was founded ...

Actually, this wouldn't quite work, because every state is officially accepted into the union on July 4. (In 1996, Utah celebrated it's Centenial on July 4, the same day we celebrated the 220th for the USA.) A state must ratify the constitution, which can be on any date, but they are officially accepted into the union on July 4.

Yesterday, at our District Cub Day Camp, I started off each of my group sessions with a question about what birthday was being celebrated that day.

Sad to say, none of the Cubs knew who Robert Baden-Powell was or what he had done. Sadder to say, the Boy Scout Staff had no idea either. The only one who had a clue was my son, & that was only because "I am constantly yammering about it". (Yeah, he's a real sweety, I only keep him around because he is bigger than me !)

Hopefully a few will remember my description of Robert Baden-Powell, his kudu horn, and what transpired on 08/01/1907, at 8:00 in the morning!

Will/did national issue a 100 years of scouting patch?

If they did, where could one buy the patch?

Thee Scouts Shop also had a badge with the 1907-2007 date, but I guess they sold out
