Ohiopyle rafting

Postby hacimsaalk » Thu Jul 19, 2007 7:03 pm

while ive been away for the month (im in NY working), our high adventure planned a rafting trip down the lower yough. its set (w/o reservations) for the 4th of august. its a good trip and all, but im worried about water level. does anybody live near there, or has anybody been rafitng down it lately? is the water high enough, or just down right too low? any help would be appreciated.

thanks.

Micah the water is very low. I talked to Eric At Wilderness-Voyaguers on Monday and it is as bad as it can be this time of year
The link below gives water levels of the Yough and Cheat right now it is a little over 1 ft at the put in. The dam is only releasing 450cfs at this time. On weekends they have been increasing to 700cfs but if things do not change that will cease. We need two or three days of good soaking rain from Maryland to Pittsburgh.

so a trip wouldnt be reccommended unless we get a good soaking? ive been trying to them that, but they wont believe me. it is supposed to rain the 3 days before we go. i guess we'll just have to see. thanks for the info though.

Don't get me wrong the river is still running and trips are still going the water is just really low. The river is at its Normal Late August level half way through July. I was on the river last wednesday and my boat has the scars from dragging on rocks and the river is lower this week.

Lets say that if you have gone before it would not be the same, but for newbies it would still be a gterat trip.

Just checked the river guage at Ohiopyle. Today would be a great day it is almost at 2' and flowing some great water. This is water coming in from the Casselman and other side streams not from the lake.

we did it after a string of storms (left over from some hurricanes) came through. it was high enough that they had to throw guides in the boats per safety regs.

The river is not too bad right now.due tosome rains . September will be about the same as now depending on Rain etc. The Corp releases water on weekends to bring the river up for the rafting companies.

August 25th is the annual over the falls day. It is worth the visit that weekend to see some really great kakayers going over the falls for Charity. They pay a fee to do this then must donate so many hours of safety time on the event.

Spent the day on the Yough. It is Great right now as the Corp is drawing down the pool for the winter. ALso today we saw 7 or 8 Bald Eagles. How Cool is That? They were all over the place. Water Temp is nice and warm so if you swim it is not a shock to the body. Have experience with that.
