Boy Scout Leader's Training Award

Just completed everything for this....actually did more than required but that is okay with me.

Never really thought about it, but new Troop Committee Chairman took me aside and asked if I had already earned this and I told him "not really", but I'm sure I have met the requirements.

I was able to document eight of the five requirements under Performance:

Participate in a support role for five overnight camp outs.

Help with two annual unit and /or district Friends of Scouting Presentations.

Participate actively in three troop parent's nights or court of honor.

Help supervise or support a troop money-earning project.

Participate in a supplemental training course at either the council or national level (Just attended Commissioner's College).

Serve as merit badge counselor for at least five scouts (all Citizenship related).

Assist actively with a Webelos den for six months.

Participate in six Boy Scout leader rountables.


I had completed all of the Training Requirements a few years ago and I have the tenure (two years required....I have nearly fifteen).

Good for you. Be sure and wear the knot that comes with the Award. The Award (and the knots) "not" only recognize one for their time,efforts, and dedication but may also cause another to get more involved. When you look at any of the Award criteria, it's just trying to ensure a complete and effective program is happening.

Yes...forgot about the knot.

I may be adding a couple of more to my current knots (Eagle Scout & Arrow of Light).

I have an interview with my Bishop (I'm LDS) for the Adult On My Honor Award. I'll pick up the adult religious knot for that one.

And, I have been blessed this past year living Southwest of Fort Worth. I live on 25 acres of land that now is part of a pool of four producing natural gas wells. Royalty checks have begun to arrive and I will be making a $1,000 donation to the Longhorn Council's endowment fund. I spoke to someone from the council office and they stated that I would be eligible for the James E. West Memorial Award, which also includes a knot.

Scouting has been a big part of shaping me into who I am and I feel it is time I start giving back both in time and money.

Outstanding, giving back that way is true Scouting spirit. Yep, them thar wells are popping up all over the State, except in my yard, haha. Could write more about it...but it would "knot" have anything to do with the Training Award.

But I know you'll do this as I do, and others with the spirit...keep going to trainings or even lead them. Not only does it help stay focused on program and changes, it demonstrates to others how important their training responsibilities are.

Just an update:

I was able to make my donation to the Longhorn Council this past Tuesday. I was told they wanted to do some sort of recognition and they asked when I would like to have it. I wasn't sure, but may just wait until the council banquet next Spring.

However, in the mail today, I received my knot (James E. West Foundation). I will proudly wear it, along with my others.

Good on you with the new knot. I just got home from a business trip to Germany a couple hours ago. I usually do not spend all my travel allowance. I put part of it away for the James E. West Award. The money for this trip takes me to $700 I shouild have the $1000 by this time next year.
I'm working more at Council level trying to help with fund raising. Always easier to ask others for help when you have done it yourself.

Good for you!!! And you are right...easier to ask others when you have done it yourself. I want to get involved more with fund raising and this was just a start.

Well done! Longhorn is a most impressive Council. I've been quite impressed with the quality of the training they've put on. That sure doesn't happen without great people!
