Cutting the sleeves off of Class "B" shirt

Postby BuffaloSE-583 » Sun Sep 09, 2007 10:40 pm

Is a Troop Class "B" Shirt still a Class "B" if someone decides to cut the sleeves off the shirt and wear it on a Troop camping trip.

What I mean by cutting the sleeves off is making it like a muscle shirt.

Sure, why not? It's not "official" anyway.

I agree with Hops, but it would be up to the troop to set the standard on acceptable attire.

I agree with both. Personally that sounds way more comfortable anyway! :D

With all due respect (and I do mean that), I'd like to disagree...

First and foremost, the uniforming policies (found in the Insignia Guide and on the Uniform Inspection sheet) BROADLY require "clean and neat" appearance and "uniformity" among the Troop's uniforms. One or two Scout's cutting the sleeves out of a regular (Scout) tee-shirt does not (to me) lend to neat. Nor does it reflect unity within the Troop.

Second, the Class "B" uniform is, in fact, official. It's more correctly referred to, but less commonly known, as the "Activity" uniform, which is nothing more than removing the Uniform (Class "A") shirt, underwhich should always be found a Scout tee-shirt.

Now that you've been thoroughly hammered by the uniform police  -- here's a thought...

If the entire Troop (or, at the very least, the youth members) voted to BUY and wear sleeveless (aren't these callede muscle shirts?) tee-shirts --not tank tops-- AS A UNIT... and the adults wore the identical tee-shirt, but with sleeves??? Well, I personally would view that as clean, neat and showing unity; I'd have a hard time finding a way to tell you it was wrong... JMHO.

I have to agree with RWSmith on this one. Cutting the sleeves off of a t-shirt is not likely to look 'clean and neat', nor uniform among group. If they were to purchase sleeveless shirts, or had someone who could alter them neatly and uniformely it may be different. Just cutting off the sleeves tends to look grubby, and the edges fray and look worse over time.

Ya know, now hearing others POV I understand where they are comming from. I think troops should get sleeveless shirts in the hot days of camp to keep all cooler and safe.

Why not have the troop offer a few muscle shirts with the same logo on them - that way those wishing for the cut offs can still be with clean seams.

Depends on the troop I guess. Mine really doesn't care as long as you look decent enough for the ladies (yes, that really has been said).

Scary enough its been said in my troop. We go to the Upper Penn. each year for a campout and theres a dance. Its an international scout ralley, so theres a lot of people. Boys and girls alike.

When you are wearing your muscle tees, make sure you sunscreen your upper torso

Excellent point, WeeWillie... You know, today, compared to 30+ years ago, we know soooo much more about how harmful UV rays can be to the skin and eyes. As Scouts, we do a lot of outdoor activities; and we need to make UV protection for our skin and eyes a habit, especially for activities in unshaded areas, and doublely-so around water, snow, etc.

BTW, we need a certain amount (about 15 minutes) of sunlight every day in order for our bodies to make Vitamin K... It's true!!!

Remember, your skin is an organ; plus, it's the only organ that never stops growing.

If you're going to be uniform in your Unit activities, do not let someone alter their activity shirt.

How many of you wore the Collarless summer uniform shirt? They were great. Very Large V neck.
