Req 1b for 2nd class scout

Postby cad-guy » Mon Sep 10, 2007 9:40 pm

requirement 1b for 2nd class is a map and compass hike. Can this hike be in town, along city streets, thru the park, up and down alleyways, or does it have to be out in the wilderness? We are not going to be able to go to an area for a wilderness hike for some time, and this is his only reqirements left. Also, it is my understanding that 5 miles is the required distance. Is this correct?

Any guidance you can give will be greatly appreciated.

It says map and compass, not map and compass and trees or wilderness.

Don't add specifics to a requirement that are not written in the book!

1. a. Demonstrate how a compass works and how to orient a map. Explain what map symbols mean.
b. Using a compass and a map together, take a 5-mile hike (or 10 miles by bike) approved by your adult leader and your parent or guardian.

For 1a we keep USGS topo maps for the scouts to learn the different symbols, elevations, etc. For 1b we use less detailed maps of our local area, which has no elevation changes. They don't need to necessarily use the compass every step of the way, but they should be able to orient the map and locate themselves anywhere along the route.

Look at the skills being taught and the examples shown. All relate to a compass and a topographic map. City, town and recreational maps do not have the required details to complete the skills being demonstrated, a.k.a. Two Norths, Ruling a Map, Understanding Contour Lines, Identifying Landmarks.

If you can't get a USGCS Map go to www.topozone.com. The site allows you to print out topomaps that are detailed enough to complete the task.

Don't read to little into the requirements. You son can still work on 1st Class requirements until your troop conducts an event where the requirement can be met the way it is demonstrated in the handbook.

It was not intended to be hostile. I am sorry if anyone was offended.
