Eagle Project - with a twist

Postby smtroop168 » Wed Oct 24, 2007 11:18 am

Need some opinions - no lack of those in this group. :D

An Eagle Project cannot benefit the Boy Scouts of America but how about the Boy Scouts of Iraq? I have a scouter currently deployed to Iraq who got a unit started over there (and got the new unit knot) They are in need of stuff. I'm not a big fan of collection drives as Eagle projects but if a scout wanted to collect stuff for these scouts what's everybody's take?

Just an idea right now...I'm not stareing at a project plan at this point.

Thanks and have a great day.

Is this a BSA Unit or an Iraqi Unit?

I'd suggest it as a leadership project (an alternative to a position of responsibility).

Is it chartered through BSA? I guess would have been a better question.
Of course waivers can be made for anything that is really worthwhile. If the SM and the ADvencement Chairfrom the district and council agree and the proper signatures can be had then it would be a Slam Dunk.

if its a bsa group i don't think you should do this, because then why can't people do there eagle project as helping troops hurt by katrina ( and other disasters)

if its a BSI (?) troop then it seems as if it would be ok.

I understand they just received recognition from WOSM so they are BSI.

I remember hearing that the headquarters building for the Iraqi Scouts was once one of Saddam's palaces.

Suggest it to your district board, the worst they can do is say no.

I agree, talk to your District Advancement Folks and see what they think, if they bless the idea, then it is a GO.

But what if once this is submitted to National, they say "No"?

The project is approved on the local level and National does not interfer with that.

National doesn't review Eagle Service Projects. They don't even see the write-ups after the fact.

OTOH, if the District and/or Council Advancement Committees are unsure of whether the project is allowable, they COULD ask for a ruling from National before they approve or deny the approval. In that case, no matter whether National says YES or NO, they have a definitive answer.

All good input. Since I am the District Approval in this case, I'll run the idea around to the other districts in the council to see what they think.

Again, I do not have a project from a scout requesting review/approval at this point but I wanted to be a little forward thinking.
