Camporee Cancelled

our camporee just got cancelled because it was to warm to kill all of the ticks and misquitos. This was council wide including everybody affiliated with the BSA. Venturers, seascouts, fire,police, ammbulance explorers.

BTW, the official bird of the Northern Tier Canoe Bases is the no-see-um mosquito.

Agreed, if you cancelled camping events in SWPA because of ticks or mosquitoes we would never go camping except during the winter months.

We post poned one a few year back in the Winter. Travel was being restricted due to a winter storm. But two weeks later we still had it.

Here on the Alabama-Georgia state line we have to remind the youth to check for ticks. I went to a National Camp school 20 plus years ago in the Florida panhandle and the ticks were so full they would constanly walk across your arm. The bed bugs were so bad it took 6 weeks for my legs to clear up.

Been there done that ( canoeing around northern teir, but not at it.) those flys and mosquitos are not very fun at all.

And I thought I had heard it all!

Ticks and mosquitoes are all over the place and the scouts would be exposed to them at home as well.

Rather than cancel an event for this type of reason, the troops should be instructing their scouts on how to properly dress and inspect themselves to minimize the impact of the pests.

The rational that we cancel events for mosquitoes would keep most troops in the country indoors much of the year. Southern troops for all year!

yep around the south unless it is super cold in the winter we still have ticks. my troop went camping last january it snowed at night but warmed up to about 60 the next day(the south is weird but still the best) and we all had ticks on our equipment and a few of us had some crawling on us. So cancelling a trip because of ticks and misquitos is just that someone in charge is not a true scout and hates camping i guess, but i cant say for sure, bugs and insects are just part of the camping experience.

Yeah all I know is if they did that to us our troop would 1 maybe 2 camping trips a year..... I thinks its absurd that they would do that, are you sure theres no other reason?

Could also be an excuse to cancel for lack of turnout.

The last time we had a district spring camporee only 3 of the 9 troops showed up. Fortunately, we had "paired-up" with another district for the event.
