why no more of the vintage hat

Why arent the scout hats of old that fold over your belt not still official. I personally like them. I happen to own one from my uncle when he was in scouts. Am i allowed to wear this at meetings etc?

I believe It is still an official hat when worn with a uniform of that period. But I could be wrong.

Me too!!!!!!! When I first saw them I thought "Wow that would be awesome to have one of those!" I really wish they were still made (they're called "flat hats" right? in CAP we call them "Blues Cover").

Be nice to see National bring them back. That and a better form of the berets (but I know there's no way we'll see the berets come back).

Yeah I love them I wore my dads old one to camp one year and got so many stares that I only ware it every so often now.... along with that there 35+ years old now and I don't want to ruin it....

The 1967 edition of the BSA Handbook refers to them as a cap. The name was borrowed from the Army "overseas cap (or hat)" that originated in WWI by soldiers serving overseas as a space saving measure.

They may appear to be cool, but fall off easily and are impractical for outdoor activities. They don't offer protection from the sun and bad weather.

By definition a uniform is worn uniformly. Mixing uniform parts from different eras is contrary to the concept.

Those of us that wore them really did not like them. Most of us wore the Youth Version of the Campaign hat. Yes they made a cheaper model for scouts.

For those of you who wore them and were later in the military and wore the ones there, is the fit any different? If not, then I wouldn'd think it's all that bad. Were scouts required to wear them outdoors? In the military that goes without saying, but I know scouting isn't the military. If nothing else, just being able to wear them to Courts of Honor and to meetings would be cool.

Yes, all BSA hats are fine for wear with the uniform, if you have one of the flat style hats and want to wear it, fine.

Hated that hat. It provided no benefits and kept falling off. I still have it though.

That is my understanding as well.

Earlier this year I listened to a Regional rep explaining the same thing about the new switchback pants. He said something to the effect that Boy Scouting periodically changes styles, but that the Scout pants are ....... well............... Scout pants, just a newer style.

Didn't these have the rank insignia on them? If that's the case, and since you're an Eagle, and so am I (which means it would have my rank), are you willing to sell it/give it away since you hate it so much?

I don't recall seeing any with rank insigna. Mine didn't. It is packed away in a box right now, so I can't look to be sure, but I think there was a Scout emblem on the front right side.

But, no I'm not really interested in selling it. I have been told that I keep a lot of "stuff", and that is true. With this type of stuff, I occassionally take it in to show Scouts the differences (and similarities) from a previous time. (And, just be cause I didn't like to wear it then, doesn't mean that I don't like to show it off now.)

I also like, and still have the old garrison cap. Years ago, there were some actual cap patches (diamonds). I like to remind people to be alert for old Scouting items. Even if you don't collect, or recognize an item's signifigance, help save them anyway.
