Paintball?

Postby fritz1255 » Wed Dec 05, 2007 8:58 am

I know I've come to the right place for this question! Is Paintball contrary to BSA regs, or is that another scouting "urban legend"? I know some of you "rules weenies" can set me straight!

Agin' the Rules

Postby ThunderingWind » Wed Dec 05, 2007 10:01 am

If I remember correctly, Paintballing and Ski Diving are the only two activites expressly written as a no no.

Paintballing is human shooting human.

Can Scouts do it? Sure. I know several who own PB guns and actively participate in the activity.

It just can not be done under any circumstance as a Unit activity. I would even stay away from any perception of smelling like a unit activity.

It has been suggested that if the topic comes up during a unit meeting, the leader clearly states, all dicussion of that topic must be done after the meeting clearly over and it is no longer a Scout meeting.

We have made it clear to our crew that they must now leave the building before discussing this activity. Since the closest pay-to-play field is 45 mintues away, it has kept them from actually going.

It is a prohibited activity. Read the Guide to Safe Scouting.

From the portion of the Local Tour Permit, signed by you, which you would be filling out to go paintballing -

"I have in my possession a copy of Guide to Safe Scouting, No. 34416D, and have read it."

From Guide to Safe Scouting, Unauthorized and Restricted Activities -

"Pointing any type of firearm (including paintball, dye, or lasers) at any individual is unauthorized."

At least us "Rules Weenies" know what we are doing.

More specifically, see http://www.scouting.org/pubs/gss/gss09.html#e

Here's an excerpt:
Unauthorized and Restricted Activities

The following activities have been declared unauthorized and restricted by the Boy Scouts of America:

...

* Pointing any type of firearm (including paintball, dye, or lasers) at any individual is unauthorized.

*sigh* ABSOLUTLEY NOT, scouts shoot guns, but not at eachother!

P.S.: I've only balled twice (quit afterwards), but I can say those balls hurt at close range!

P.S.S.: not to mention expensive, what happened to "thrifty"?

I have had several scouts bring flash lights with lasers on them on camping trips, including my own son.
I did not know that lasers were not authorized.
If I remember correctly a laser pointer was used during several adult training courses that I attended including Woodbadge.

I will correct this item with our troop at our need meeting.

Why would there be a need for a laser pointer when camping? Are the boys doing outdoor presentations?

Can Venturing play paintball or airsoft? I know they can do more than scouts, but am unsure if this is ok.

Nope, no paintball for Venturing Crews either. It is a thought, join Crew 666, the Paintball crew, the uniform could be a tie dyed t-shirt to represent how you look after a day afield. Oh well, that thing about pointing a weapon/firearm at another person (even a paintball gun or airsoft gun) still holds true even for Venturing

Now,I wonder about a stalking crew? as in sneak up to people without them knowing, not harrassing people... then again sneaking up to someone is sorta harassing them. Wait a minute, sneak up to a fellow crew member, yeah, that's an idea, let me work on that!

Cool, can I play? I have an old ghillie suit I would love to use again. Instead of tagging the person, we could take photos of them and show them "hey, I was this close."

yes, I know as I had to pass that requirement lo so many years ago. I like the taking the picture aspect. Like need a picture of a deer at 10 feet, thats skill! Unless its like around Valley Forge where they eat out of your hand almost
