Spoke to the gentleman on our Troop Committee who was on staff at 2005 Jamboree. Said he was on the Merit Badge Midway.

He said he is all really to go again in 2010 and we tentatively agreed to car pool together.

He is 65 years old and has attended every Jamboree since 1957.

However, not sure what I would be good at or what is needed.

How do you get to work on merit badge midway?

It varies, depending on the merit badge. Staff for most booths are supplied by professional groups with ties to the badge and that have helped with preparation of the pamphlet for that adge, or by military (reserve) contingents.

For example, in the last two Jambos, the Traffic Safety booth (where I worked) was staffed by members of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Liberty Mutual Insurance, and the Fairfax County VA Police Dept; Dentistry and Medicine by Army Medical Corps Reservists, Electricity and Electronics by members of the IEEE., etc.

What merit badges would you be interested in?

Truck transportation is my favorite to teach, I work at Cummins Diesel in the test engineering dept. Boys scouts troops come in 4 or 5 times a year to get a tour of the plant and after the tour we go to a class room watch a couple videos of trucks and go over the merit badge.

Just heard from my contact with the Jamboree. he said they will start filling some positions in February. These would be the heads of certain things. Action Center Director,Sub Camp Chiefs etc. Then those people will recruit their key staff members and then those key people will recruit to fill their respective staffs.
A word of caction to those of you that will have a scout going with the council and you as a staff member. You have a job to do and most times your schedule will be totally different then your boys. ALso you usually do not get to pick when you are off when you are on staff. Some positions have a lot more time off than others. But usually those with less time off are far more rewarding. Those are the jobs that you are working directly with the scouts.

I agree with Wagion, if you are working on staff and your son attending as a participant, do not plan on spending any significant amount of time with them. Chances are slim that you will have the kind of time off for that.

Greater Cleveland Council is sending four troops to 2010 Nat'l.

I've got an interview for one of the adult leadership positions next Wednesday afternoon.
They'll need a total of 12 leaders (over the age of 21) with two alternates.

Hope I get picked....However, I've not yet started Woodbadge (targeting fall 2008) or attened the NTC at Philmont (perhaps summer of 2008...summer 2009 for sure).

They would have to go with a neighboring council. There are NO troops for lone scouts. The Scouts Have a basic Jamboree fee that everyone pays, Then the councils charge for transportataion, equipment etc. Depending upon where you are coming from say out west the councils take advantage of a trip to such an historic area of our country. DC WIlliamsburg, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville,Fredericksburg etc. Busch Gardens etc. and they include that into the cost. Some Troops from out west actually do these things and go to NYC on the way home and Fly out from there. Basic youth fee last time was like 275.00 adult fee was 575.00? or someting like that. By the way my council is 5 hours away by bus and charged 1250.00 last time.

As I recall, the basic fee was $595 for everyone, EXCEPT youth STAFF, who paid $295.

So Adults and Youth in Contingent Troops paid $595 plus the local amount.

Adult Staff paid $595 plus they had to arrange their transportation individually, and Youth staff paid $295 plus their transportation costs.

I guess that sounds correct. It is so hard to remember that stuff. I am sure it is going up in 2010 and that will cut down on the amount of people willing to staff the Jamboree.
