District Camporee Activity Idea's

At Last nights district roundtable I agreed to head up our district camporee committee. We are looking at ideas for events at this camporee along the lines of old scouting skills, such as morse code and tracking. We are looking for activity ideas that are different from same old who can tie knots or boil water the fastest.

All ideas along these lines would be greatly appriciated.

We had one where each troop had to build a catapult from logs etc lash everything together with lashing and launch a bag full of somthing (can't remember) also how heavy. The one that launched it furthest won.
Another was a Emergency Prepardness camporee. Compass COurse,Accident Scene etc.
How about a GPS Geocaching Camporee Contact your local Orienteering club for help.

We just finished a Wilderness Survival weekend in our District.
The Spring Camporee theme is Indian Lore
Also had an Athletics weekend, a Pioneering weekend, and a Space Exploration weekend, where everyone built model rockets and they all got to launch them.

Perhaps a Mountain Man type theme or any period before all the new gadgets came along will set the stage for your desired activities. The suggestion of Wilderness Survival is always a good way to tie in communication methods they may need.

Heres a Thought ANd it will go over like a lead balloon but here it goes.

No Gas stoves, No CarPorts, No Chuck Boxes, No Kitchens, Only Cooking over charcoal or wood. Must hike and carry everything in the last 1/2 mile to the camping site. The adults are not allowed to touch anything used to prepare the meals. They may cook their own(adult patrol) but the boys must do everything no adult help. (supervision from afar is fine).

The boys do the menus and do all the food buying.

Sorry but it sounds like scouting to me.

I like your idea wagion. 90% of the meals are cooked over a fire or charcoal by my troop.
The one problem is location has already been selected. It is a old scout camp that has been closed for repairs for over a year. This will be the first time district will beable to use property. The camp only about 45 arces with 10 of those being a steep hillside.

One I truly love is making scouts put together a tent blinded folded. It teaches you how to work together.

Hills? That is no problem move where I am from there is no place that there is not a hill. Pick a Parking area away from the camping area and that is where they must carry their gear from. Make it very clear that no Vehicles will be allowed to go past that point. One trip only!
We had a camporee when I was a Youngster that we hiked a section of the mason-dixon line between PA-Wv and MD We started on Friday evening hiked about 5 miles or so spent the night started out after breakfast and Hiked until dinner time Spent the night then hiked the last part of the trail and ended up where the 3 states come together. Each troop had their picture taken at the Junction. Leaders today would not go for anything like this it is too scout like

We had a camporee one year where a troop backpacked to the camp from their meeting place to the camp. It's about 6 miles or so.

I too have accepted the role of running our districts fall camporee. I like the suggestion that I have seen so far.

and Yes..... Hiking (3 miles in no vehicles)
The activities come fromt the themes. We usually get about 400 to 700 scouts.
