Canoeing

Postby teepeeayy » Sun Jan 20, 2008 4:24 pm

Delaware County (Philly 'burbs) troop considering a high adventure week in the summer as a canoeing trip.

Wanted: Ideas for locations within a "few" hours drive. Will need canoes when we get there, will be bringing everything else. Relatively quite too. As much as I enjoy the upper Delaware River (the Gap), its darn crowded in summer.

Some of us adults would like it to be a 50-miler if we're gonna do it.

50-miler? Perhaps consider Northern-Tier for '09?

Maybe a little farther than you are thinking driving-wise, but how about Tinnerman?

The Yough is great, but make sure they're prepared if they're going to do the upper portion.

Making it 50 miles is a great idea! Our boys have talked a lot about getting that award, but haven't yet gotten around to doing it ;-).

Ours have done 2 50 milers - one in Algonquin and one on the Au Sable River in Michigan.

I know this post has been inactive for a few months, but good to add to! How about a 50 miler on the Fulton Chain in NY's Adirondack Mtns? Start at Old Forge and paddle to Blue Mtn. Lake or to Paul Smith's College? Or another route can be planned on either the Mohawk River/Barge Canal (follows the old Erie Canal route) or on the Champlain Canal from Albany/Troy north to Whitehall? The upper Delaware is great also, from Hancock south to Port Jervis. All are great paddles, terrific scenery, and good fishing. Have fun  !
