I respectfully submit the following change to all adult training:

At the completion of NLE, Position Specific and YPT, give the leaders a progress card that corresponds with the training received. This would be given out along with the little pocket cards.

The newly trained adult would then have a few things done for the postion knot they could earn (if they so chose to complete the requirements).

We often give out the training cards upon the completion of a training. That way, it is dated and initialed/signed by the trainer. We tell them to hang on to the cards and work on the requirements on them.

During NLE and Position Specific Training, we always make sure we have copies of the Progress Cards that are needed to track the requirements for awards (Den Leader, Scouter Training, etc.) and pass them out. We also have a short explaination of it.

Progress

This is done in some areas, though I've seen it wane in my area. Some of us are bringing the practice back in...during training when all recognitions are explained, just make sure they receive or they're directed to the "cards".

To help with that, one of my Districts has re-instituted the little card holders for the Scouter to wear. They also hang all their beads from this little fob thingy. And there's no limit to what you can issue a bead for, haha.

Sad to say this varies council to council and in some cases district to district.

As repeated above, it is a practice, not a requirement.

I think it ought to be more of a requirement and part of the training.

Whe I was Roundtable Commissioner I filled out cards for everyone on the staff and filled things as they di them so they were sure to get the recognition when they put in the time. In most cases I did not tell them I was doing it and surprised them with their Knot.

Our District Trainers do the same.

Now I have a question, I know that you can print the Progress Reports out from just about any "awards" defining web site, but as a young scout i remeber these being provided to me by the Scoutmaster.... is there any where that say the Pack Trainer can go to get these Progress reports for their Leaders.......and hand them out

Yep. Do it all the time. Since you can print one anytime, you can do it again later after a time and you know they didn't  .

Printed Mine, too

Postby ThunderingWind » Tue Jan 29, 2008 8:37 am

I printed mine as well.

The adults awards were not explained at any of my training courses except the Venture Leaders course. But then they only explained the Venture Leader Award that can only be given by the Council at the rate of 2 per 50 crews for adults.

Well, I guess I had also heard about the Silver Critter-of-the-Month awards too.

But that was it.

Awards

Postby riverwalk » Tue Jan 29, 2008 1:34 pm

Well unfortunately different training sessions will cover detail in various ways. They don't even need to mention the silver animals unless someone asks about "that knot there", since you can't earn those. They should explain the position related or service related ones.

Sometimes the best thing for an aware Scouter to do, is be a Trainer. I can't imagine any experienced Scouter not being part of their Training team. Now in our Council the Exec has asked trainers to help Districts needing help. That's another way to give back, and mentor someone until they can do it.
