Eagle Invitations for Black Scouts?

Postby LSR » Sun Mar 16, 2008 6:23 pm

Just got back from an Eagle Court of Honor at the Church. Fine young man and it was an absolute pleasure to see him get his Eagle (and to know that there are three right behind him!)

Something struck me when I was looking at the program (They come from the Scout Shop and have a painting of a young man getting his Eagle on the cover.) I didn't remember seeing any Eagle COH supplies that featured non-White Scouts at the Scout Shop. I took a look at Scoutstuff.com when I got home, sure enough, that's the case.

The BSA does a superb job of making its materials inclusive. This is really easy to fix and ought to be done posthaste.

Don't specifically know about the scoutshop, but there is plenty of minority recognition in the training videos.

I checked national supply web site. The only items that they show with a scout receiving his Eagle is Joseph Csatari's painting "Court of Honor".
I preformed a site search using "eagle" There were only 2 differnt pictures showing a scout the above painting and a Norman Rockwell painting.

Indeed there is. The BSA has done a commendable job in that regard. I've NEVER seen ANY BSA material that didn't have Scouts of every background (and faith, for the religious awards.) That's why the Eagle invitations really stuck out. I really expected to see invitations with non-White Scouts in Scoutstuff.com.

LSR, you might consider submitting any such input you have. There are a variety of images and renderings, as others have pointed out, and I imagine other supplies can be considered. Granted they'll probably make decisions based on quantities anticipated, but your interest would be valid.

I've sent it off to our Council Scout Executive. If anyone at National is reading this - get to it!
