Great Traing Weekend

Just back from a multi-Council Commissioner training. It was Great (as usual).

Some observations:

Scouters are good people!
Great to hear what others that you don't normally assocaiate with on a regular basis are doing (so you can borrow and/or modify the ideas).
Great to hear that others have the same problems that we do.
Scouting is fun.

Talked to people I had met before, met new people, and learned some things.

For example, a Scouting quote:

"Scouting is Fun. If it isn't fun, it isn't Scouting."

Anyone know who said that? (We were told, but I don't seem to have gotten that part written down.)

Didn't get to meet any folks from this forum (as far as I know), but I did get some info on one of our promient participants from someone who knows him (think Greater Cleveland Council). Everything good (of course).

Other than the weather, I too had a great training weekend.

We just presented our first Cub Scout Outdoor Training, which is a combination of BALOO and WOLF. We trained 53 people who now can go back and take their packs camping. The participants seemed to soak up the information, and had good humor despite the rain and snow flakes. We had a couple of bumps in the road, but it was a good learning experience for all involved.

Spent a great weekend with some great people. Got only about 5 hours sleep the entire weekend, but sometimes that happens. I consider the other staffers my family.

I'm beginning to think that a bit of snow is mandatory for any outdoor skills training. Seems to work that way for us. (Maybe not this spring - not scheduled until May.)

My experience has been that (generally) the adults are as excited about outdoor activities as the youth are. They seem to love to do the activities (if you keep it fun). (Well, maybe not the the 17 degree nights and snow. Myself, I'm happy to see snow - not rain and not melted snow, but that is what we normally get more of.)

And, yes, short sleep and close relationships with the staff are part of the weekend, too. If you can keep some of the same staff for subsequent trainings and remember to apply the lessons learned (you did/will review the weekend?) you can usually increase the sleep and reduce the stress level.

Glad to see that you enjoy the training. I know that I do, and I know that it is important to provide the training!!

Indeed it is! (and no, we don't get a waiver down here either.) My Scoutmaster Outdoor Leadership Skills Weekend was in Dec and dipped into the 20's (No snow however, so I'm not fully trained.) Our Woodbadge weekend (Which I regretfully had to pass on. I was staffing the Religious Emblems Camp) has a tad over an inch of snow-in March. That's beyond wierd for Shreveport, LA! Our Cubmaster is a "Snow" Fox!
