I have a Boy Scout Ceremonies resoruce book that I developed as part of my Wood Badge ticket, it has ceremonies for Tenderfoot up to and including Eagle, with three for all ranks except Life. Included are a veritable plethora of openings and closings and inducitons for Patrol Leader, Den Chief, Quatermaster, Sribe Librbarian, etc. . PM me with an Email and I would be proud to share this with you

OGB,
Looks like PMing has been disabled! Would it be possible to put it on a web site & post the URL?

Thanks

OGB,

I'd suggest you send it to Optimist, along with an explanation; he can (if he so chooses) post it over on MeritBadge.com. BTW, you can reference this thread, if you want to, it is: http://www.meritbadge.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=413.)

Well, it looks like the graphic username and password interface is down right now; it was okay earlier today. In fact, it looks as though all of the graphics on that site are "hosed" right now. Guess you'll have to try the above link again, later.

If you want, I can host it for you if its not too big. Just let me know.

Don't know what type of ceremonies you are looking for. But I found some great Web ones on ScoutXing.com.

anyway, to answer the original question, this has always been my favorite way to end a campfire

When I was a scout, lo those many years ago, after Brownsea Island but before the demise of the Red Berets, the troop I was in had a tradiiton of ending each campfire with the singing of Scout Vespers with Taps sung next without a break.

Each line of Taps would be sung and then a senior boy leader of the troop would speak the Scout Oath one phrase at a time. At the end of the phrase the Troop would sing the next line of Taps and so on. I always thought it was a powerful way to end a campfire. It was considered quite an honor to be selected as the solo speaker, because it meant you had the confidence of the scoutmaster not to mess it up. It went like this:

(Troop sings )

Softly falls the light of day
As our campfire fades away
Silently each scout should ask
Have I done my daily task
Have I kept my honor bright
Can I guiltless sleep tonight
Have I done or have I dared
Everything to be prepared

(PAUSE)

Day is done
(spoken by one scout ) ON MY HONOR

Gone the sun
(spoken by one scout ) I WILL DO MY BEST

From the Lake
(spoken by one scout ) TO DO MY DUTY TO GOD AND MY COUNTRY

From the hills
(spoken by one scout ) AND TO OBEY THE SCOUT LAW

From the sky
(spoken by one scout ) TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE AT ALL TIMES

All is well
(spoken by one scout ) TO KEEP MYSELF PHYSICALY, STRONG, MENTALLY AWAKE

Safely rest
(spoken by one scout) AND MORALLY STRAIGHT

God is nigh.

The following is an opening for a Fall Court of Honor, in the troop we also induct the SPL at the Fall and Spring Court of Honor. Although this is written for the fall, it wouldnt take much to adapt it to any time of the year.

A FALL COURT OF HONOR OPENING
(Honor Patrol already standing in front of the audience)

MC: Color Guard, Post the colors

(Color Guard posts the colors)

MC: Ladies and Gentleman please join me in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance…

MC: As the days begin to shorten, as the temperatures begin to cool, as students return to school, And as leadership assumes new roles, we celebrate a time of advancement and change. Would The Honor Patrol recite the Opening

(The Honor Patrol reads the following)

To everything -
There is a season -
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to be born
A time to die
A time to plant
A time to reap
A time to kill
A time to heal
A time to laugh
A time to cry

To everything -
There is a season -
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to build up
A time to break down
A time to dance
A time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together
A time to weep

To everything -
There is a season -
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time of war
A time of peace
A time of love
A time of hate
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

To everything -
There is a season -
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to gain
A time to lose
A time to rend
A time to sew
A time to love
A time to hate
A time of peace
We swear it's not too late

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to Troop xxx XXX Court of Honor

One often hears that the most diificult transition in Scouting is that of from scout to Adult Scouter. The following ceremony makes a clear distinction that the member is no longer a scout, but is now considered to be an adult:

Bridging a Scout to ASM

Scoutmaster: Tonight, we are saddened to say farewell to one of our Scouts whom has reached the age of 18. As you know, Boy Scouting officially ends for our youth at the age of 18. I have asked our Commissioner (name), to be present this evening in order to assist (name), our Troop Committee Chairman and myself with this presentation.
Will (rank of Scout) (name) come forward at this time and please stand in front of our Troop's flag.

(all participants move toward the flag. The Scout should be in front of the flag, the Scoutmaster and others behind the flag but still visible to the audience.)

Troop Committee Chair:
(Scout's Name), we have seen you grow physically from the time you became a member of this Troop on (date that Scout became a member of the Troop). We witnessed your progress from boy to man through our program. We are proud to have had you serve as a member and leader of this Troop and we would like to present you with a small token of our pride in you and your progress. May you wear it as you make your way through this world, remembering the good times you have had in this Troop and the great friends you have met while here.

(Troop Committee Chair pins the small Universal emblem on the shirt of Scout. He salutes the Scout, and then shakes hands with him. The Troop Committee Chair stands back and the Commissioner steps forward.)

Commissioner:
(Scout's Name), your involvement in the Scouting program is noteworthy and your progress along the Scouting trail has been noticed by those outside your Troop. As you know, your Troop is one of several belonging to the Council, and we are proud to have been able to provide you with this great and valuable experience. You have learned as much as you could about this great land-its people, its past, present and your future within it. You participated with other Scouts, under leadership from others; and later, under your own leadership, to complete service and conservation projects to benefit others. Your citizenship in Scouting was only a subset of your citizenship as a member of this community, this state and this wonderful nation of ours. We will miss your enthusiasm and willingness to serve.

Scoutmaster:
(Scout's Name), Anytime a Scout leaves my Troop, I feel a little sad for them and myself. Sad, because I too, remember the great times we have had together and will miss your company here. More importantly, I feel sad because I feel that perhaps I did not have enough time in order to further develop you along character lines. I hope that my personal example to you have given you ample opportunities to see the way I live and apply the principles of Scouting to my personal life.

(The scout and Scoutmaster shake hands and the scout leaves the room, the scoutmaster and all in attendance watch the scout leave the room, close the door sharply for extra effect, everything should be silent, the sign could be used to maintain silence)

Scoutmaster:
It is indeed an honor to introduce the newest Assistant scoutmaster of Troop XXX.

(The scout who left the room, re-enters with an ASM patch pinned to his shoulder)

When its this time of the year, with it getting dark so early in the evening, this is a great opening for Courts of Honor. Start with a long slender almost taper candle and have three candles, normally Red White and Blue, on a table.

Light of Scouting Opening, Court of Honor

Start the ceremony in complete darkness. Start with a single candle torch that represents the Light of Scouting. Three candles will be lit from the original candle.

SPL (Lights candle with a kitchen match)The Light of Scouting burns within every Scout, giving us direction in our daily lives."
(Moving to three candles): "The first duty of a Scout is to God, Country, and the Scout Law."

TROOP (LOUDLY, as SPL lights the first candle): "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law."

SPL: "The second duty of a Scout is to other people."

TROOP: (LOUDLY, as SPL lights the second candle) "To help other people at all times."

SPL: "The third duty of a Scout is to himself."

TROOP: (LOUDLY, as SPL lights the third candle) "To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."

SPL Welcome to Troops XXX Court of Honor...
