Jamboree Physical Requirements

Postby wagionvigil » Thu May 29, 2008 11:44 am

National is looking at everyones BMI in the application Process. What it boils down to is they may cut off participation at a BMI of 40 or more.
I am 5'11" and weighed 185 on Monday That gives me a BMI iof 25.4 which is in the Overweight area. I need to come down to 177 to be in the normal range.

They are trying to stop a repeat of 2005 and the problem was over weight adults and youth plus the out of shape youth. Anyone going to the Jamboree Needs to start walking and start it now in the summer.

I just checked my own. I am at 26.4, which is a bit overweight, but not much. I'd like to lose 15 pounds, which gets me into the normal area. But I am 6 feet tall.

If they cut it off at 40 BMI, a person my height could weigh 294 lbs. and still attend. I don't know how to judge that. When I see someone who's obviously heavier than myself I don't try to estimate his weight, so I don't know how many people this would exclude. I can certainly see the logic behind this, though.

Ok guys it is really not that hard to drop a few pounds. I have lost 9 since Memorial Day. Cut out bread and just about all sugar. 1600 calories a day pluis walking around 5 miles a day. For an old guy I actually am not starving. :)

Good for you wagion!!!

Beginning April 23rd, I just cut the portions I eat during meals in half. Also switched to water only. Started some exercise, but not full force yet.

I've lost 28 pounds and feel great. My BP has gone down too.

I feel mine has. My BP when I went for my camp physical in April was 143/104.

Last week when I went in for my follow up, it was 98/65. He had put me on a medication, but he said to go another month and may pull me off of it. I really hadn't set a goal as far as weight loss because I really didn't start off trying to lose weight....it was my BP I was thinking about.

I don't know my weight. I have been doing distance running, sprints, and lifting two days a week so imagine it isn't that bad. After July I'll be in amazing shape. :D

AT the council Executive Board meeting last night it was mentioned that everyone attending the Jamboree would need to meet the Philmont Weight Requirements. I do not have those but someone said a BMI under 30 is that what it is?

Man, I have to drop a bunch. And it will not all be fat. I have some very large, solid legs and nearly freakish extra wide shoulders.

I am at 34.7 using the scale provided by Wagionvigil, 5' 9" and 235lb. But if I am tested with the electronic Body Fat machine, I am not that bad, down near 22%.

I am thinking there will be some give in this but I know at Philmont they are pretty strict about it. Hey two years anyone can loose a few.
I think you would be OK using the Electronic measure which is more accurate. Just did this at The Local Shop n save at a Medical check BP etc and I was about 20 instead of 24

New Medical Form - Mandatory for Jambo

Postby Billiken » Fri Dec 19, 2008 10:33 am

As posted:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3033

The new medical form has height/weight requirements applicable (written in bold red ink) where "ground evacuation could take longer than 30 minutes".

So what's the scuttle-butt.....is Nat'l going to enforce weight maximums for the 2010 Jamboree?????

They will enforce it for all outside physical work. I also look for something that the BSA will not be responsible for anything that may result in your still attending be posted or required. I am also thinking that I will start to use these for Climbing and caving. They are not "mandatory" for most activities but for things that have a high chance of things happening I would enforce them.
