Eagle Project helping GSUSA?

Postby LSR » Sun Apr 13, 2008 11:00 pm

I spent last Sat supervising archery at out local GSUSA council's camp (Our Churches' GS Troop was camping there and their council recognized my BSA archery/BB gun cert.)

I got a tour from the ranger (great guy, he's been restoring the camp from a several years long shutdown.) While we were walking around, I got to thinking. There were lots of things (trail marking, repair, and safety railings, etc.) that needed to be done and would make great Eagle projects.

My reading of the Eagle project rules (I'm FAR from an expert) would seem to allow this as it's not BSA property. I also think it would be neat to help out a fellow Scouting organization.

There was a young man in our area who did his Eagle project for the local GSUSA council camp. If I remember correctly, it was a handicappable entrance ramp for one of their buildings. So, it was acceptable here.

The Requirement

As stated in the Boy Scout Handbook: While a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to your religious institution, school, or your community. (The project should benefit an organization other than the BSA.) The project plan must be approved by the organization benefiting from the effort, your unit leader (Scoutmaster, Varsity Scout Coach, Venturing crew Advisor), unit committee, and by the council or district advancement committee before you start. You must use the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook, No. 18-927E, or this online equivalent, in meeting this requirement.

Limitations

Routine labor (a job or service normally rendered) should not be considered. Work involving council property or other BSA activity is not permitted. The project also may not be performed for a business or an individual, be of a commercial nature, or be a fund-raiser. (Fund-raising is permitted only for securing materials or supplies needed to carry out your project.)

So an Eagle Project for the GSA would be okay under the "community" category.

Absolutely OK! List those ideas for projects and hand them out at a Roundtable or an Eagle Project workshop (if your council has one). Get the word out and the Girl Scouts may help your council some day!

This weekend our district is having Popcorn Training. Babysitting provided by a local GSUSA Troop.

Add to my signature Registered Adult Girl Scout Leader. I'm sure that I am not the only father with a daughter on this discussion list.

Looks good to me. It helps GSUSA, not BSA.

Sounds like an excellent idea and a great way to assist a fellow scouting organization.
