Eagle Scout Leadership POR

Postby ronin718 » Mon Aug 18, 2008 4:15 pm

Okay, folks, I need some clarification. MB.org says the Bugler position is a valid POR for Leadership time for Eagle. Scouting.org says it's not, and it's not listed in the reqs for Eagle in the Book.

So, what's the correct answer?

The 2008 Eagle Application does not list it as a POR.

Then I take it the answer is 'no', bugler does not apply.

Bugler has NEVER, as far back as I'm aware, been eligible for use as a POR toward Eagle advancement. It IS eligible for use as a POR for Star and Life, however.

It's not likely that the official BSA website would be wrong. What does your Boy Scout Handbook say?

The official web site (www.scouting.org) does not list bulger as a POR for eagle. :) The acceptable PORs are under rank requirements for boy scouts.

I can't find where mb.org says Bugler counts for Eagle. Paul is correct about Star/Life. Prior to 1963 PORs weren't listed as a requirement. You only had to serve satisfactorily as a Life Scout.

Take a look at the position description for Bugler. Here's the quote from the Info line: "Serving as Bugler can apply towards Positions of Responsibility requirements for Star, Life, and Eagle."

I guess we need a little editing there.

I see it now. I'm sure the editors will take care of that. You must have a Life scout who is the Bugler!

We have 2 life scouts in our troop that are buglers, niether of them get POR for this postion. They have other POR's that count toward eagle. One of them used bugler for Star and Life but can not for eagle.

Yep, I do.... My son. He boarded Life last month, and it's a point of concern due to the fact that he'd like to get his Eagle while with our current troop, and we may be getting transferred overseas next summer. We'll now have to address the POR issue when operations resume next month so he can meet this time req.

You could always do like some of our neighboring troops did at camp. They just took advantage of our bugler to tell them when it was time to wake up or go to sleep. Supposedly made an impression on their boys, having a 12-year-old bugler in another troop to show them how it's done.

LOL! They have a great teacher that they practice with. He is our OA section advisor along with our lodge advisor. He is by far the greatest person I have ever meet in scouting. He has bugle practice for anyone that is willing to attend every Monday from 6:00 to 6:30.
