Another Eagle Looking for a Project

My other Eagle Scout candidate is off and running and getting his project together. Extremely proud of him.

I now have another young man looking for a project and wanted to run his two ideas (so far) by the group:

1. Supply drive for the local town/county animal control shelter. There is a need for dog food, cat food , and a wide variety of other items used at an animal shelter. One item he was interested in helping get were special beds that are used in animal shelters called Kuranda Dog Beds. http://kuranda.com/catalog/view_donee.php

These costs about $55.00 each. Part of his idea was to also include awareness of the animal shelter and their continuing needs.

2. Assist local genealogical society by selecting one of the county cemeteries and along with cleaning and repairing items, also transcribe and photograph the tombstones within the cemetery. He has already contacted the local person and will meet with them next week.

Any advice or guidance or experience appreciated.

Helping Dogs and Dead people. Seen both done.

No cash donation jar as you cannot raise money just to donate it to a group.

Be careful with gravestone restoration..might want some expertise consulted.

I have mentored Scouts doing both types.
1. The dog beds: $ drop cans, door-to door $ collections or in front of the local store are NO GOOD. As mentioned, we can not be a fund raiser for another organization. Have him run it like our "Scouting for Food" drive. I'm sure the shelter can use other things, like food, towels and blankets to put in the beds, the beds themselves, pet toys, etc. Create a flyer, attach it to some bags, and deliver to 4 or 5 neighborhoods on one Saturday and collect them the next. Yes, you may get some checks, but take it and buy more of the supplies on the flyer and add them to the pile. You'll be surprised that people like to help the animals!
2. The cemetery: To fix and clean grave stones DOES require professional help and may involve chemicals. Not much of a chance to show leadership here, unless there is brush removal that is needed, perhaps fixing stone walls and/or wrought iron fencing (or painting it), and doing some research on the history of the cemetery. After listing the gravestone names, turn the results into the Geneology Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Last night, Eagle Scout candidate called the director of the local humane society to discuss needs. Of course, they needed donations of food and other supplies; however, in keeping with the guidelines of an Eagle Scout project, this is what was requested:

The humane society was in desperate need of having repairs made to the fencing/caging of the dog runs that they have. Total number of dog runs is ten. Along with the repairs, painting is needed. She also stated that they needed five dog shelters/houses either repaired or replaced.

I haven't spoken to the Eagle Scout candidate yet. We are meeting tonight to discuss preliminary plans on getting his proposal written up. However, I got a call from the lady in charge of the humane society. She was nearly in tears because no one has ever called to ask for suggestions for an Eagle Scout project and was so grateful this young man had made his offer.

To be sure young man was headed in the right direction, I sent an email to district advancement person and she responded that she believed it was a worthy project and she looked forward to having him present his proposed project idea.

Well my son did his project cleaning, repairing, painting and a few other items at our local Humane Society. They always need help and work. The had just taken about 60 horses and was running low on money. The ladies in charge were so happy and glad that somebody helped out.
