Facebook in lieu of Troop Website?

Postby troop2dad » Thu Oct 16, 2008 7:00 pm

Has anyone tried a facebook site? In talking with our scouts they determined they would be more likely to post things to a troop facebook site than someone webmastering a web site.

Just a thought to keep up with the current generation and how they communicate. To the best of my knowledge its free and can be open or closed to just the guys in your troop.

I was thinking about having #1 do a Facebook one for his new troop. Seems like it would be fairly simple, so long as the parents agreed to let their Scouts open a Facebook account.

The nice thing about Facebook is that only people you allow to join can see the Scout's profiles. The downside is that they require real names. I suppose they could use their first name and a codeword for their last name (i.e., David Schnozzberry, Michael Sleepsalot, etc.) For privacy, though, they wouldn't be able to link to their other friends. If I click on John Appleseed and see that six of his friends' last names are Applegate, it's not too far a reach to figure out his real last name.
