Weather Training

Postby wagionvigil » Fri Nov 28, 2008 12:44 pm

A word to he wise. AS of 1/1/09 a weather trained person is required on all ACTIVITIES. They must be listed on the tour permit and better be present. Also I would like to remind everyone that any time you are doing any type of Climbing Activity at least one leader on site MUST have CPR and At Least Basic First AId Training and be current. It is not up to the Provider to have this for you. COS requires it. If anyone wishes to question this let me know and I will show you in writing from BSA.

What qualifications does it take to be "weather trained"? I have not heard this before but I would agree we could all use a greater awareness of the actual weather conditions, how to read them and a contigency plan when this get severe.

There was a rumor floating around at summer camp that it would become mandatory for at least one adult to have CPR and First Aid training for a tour permit. We had members of our troop and pack completed the training - not becasue of the impending rumor but becasue we felt our boys deserved it.

Seems as though the training requirement is always out before the training is made available for us to be qualified. Always a curious thought on leadership.

The Weather Hazard Training has been online since early summer and IMHO the best one of the bunch. It takes about 45 minutes but is well worth it

Yep, available online. Most of it is (like all of our training) common sense, but still informative. I was not aware that is now required when I took it, I just like to learn and wanted to "be prepared" for any eventuality. Figured a little extra knowledge never hurts, but not knowing something can kill.

Our SM hooked the laptop up to the video projector and went through it with the entire troop at a scout meeting one week.

Got pretty much the whole troop and the adults that go on the outings all trained at once.

How do you print the card for training like that?

When you are finished it take you to a print card thing. You must do this after you set up a my scouting account using your membership number. You can do Safety Afloat, Safe Swim, Youth Protection, Fast Start, Weather Awareness, committee training etc. Your Council gets a copy that you did this at the same time

From the New Tour Permit

Activity Standards: Where swimming or boating is included in the program, Safe Swim Defense and/or Safety Afloat standards are to be followed.

If climbing/rappelling is included, then Climb On Safely must be followed. At least one person must be trained in CPR from any recognized

agency for Safety Afloat and Climb On Safely. At least one adult on a pack overnighter must have completed Basic Adult Leader Outdoor

Orientation (BALOO).
Effective for tours on January 1, 2009, at least one adult must have completed Planning and Preparing for Hazardous

Most of the adults have already taken it on-line and are listed as trained. But even if the kids don't get little cards printed saying they are trained, they have been exposed to the information and hopefully retain a little of it.

You fill out a Training roster and submit it to council and some at council will fill out cards and register the training

One of my assistants has completed the online Weather Training program and said it was not bad at all. I took it during one of my midnight shifts at the 911 center. I have to agree. This is one of the better online training programs that I have taken!
