Eagle BOR this Month?

Our most recent Eagle candidate just got all of his stuff signed off, just before his 18th birthday, which is today. I cannot recharter him as a youth member since he will be 18 on Jaunuary 1, 2009. Does this mean his Eagle BOR must be this month (before next year)? If it slips to next year, do I have him fill out an adult application, or does it matter?

When does your council actually recharter? You can figure that out by looking at your membership card. I expect that date is not Jan 1 since it sounds like you have not rechartered yet. Maybe register him as a venturing youth?

The effective date is either December 31 2008 or January 1 2009. Either way, he showed up as being ineligible for reregistration as a youth member of our unit, so I had to drop him from the roster as of next year. I have gone through the rechartering process and l will be delivering the paperwork this Saturday at our district rechatering "event".

Again, does he need to register for some position in Scouting if his BOR slips to next year?

In 2006, we had a Scout complete all Eagle paperwork before his Nov 22 birthday to turn 18. He was not registered as an adult member for the following year. His BoR was held in January. He is an Eagle.

Since an EBOR can be held after the scout's 18th birthday (up to 3 months with no district/council approval; up to 6 mos with justification and D/C okay and past 6 mo w/more justification and National okay) there is no problem. This occurs regularly with scouts heading off to college in September and EBORs held at XMAS break. There is also no requirement to register as an adult leader, so you can hold his EBOR after 1 Jan.

We'll hold it as soon as we can, hopefully this year. A few years ago the Troop (apparently mistakenly) had a boy register as an adult because his Eagle BOR was the next year. Thanks - you saved us from making the same mistake twice.
