Troop Leadership Training-HELP!

Postby LSR » Sun Nov 09, 2008 11:06 pm

Just bought the TLT handbook at the Scout Shop. I want to get the training done for the Troop so that if the Council ever gets off the dime and has a NYLT, our Scouts will have the prerequisite TLT. I know two Scouts in another troop who took NYLT in TX. They are the only ones I know of in our Council. Ok, 'nuff with the ranting..... :?

For the Scoutmasters/Scouts who have given/taken the training-any suggestions? I've read the manual through, but am interested in hearing from those who've actually done it.

Ive never run through the new version, but I've done the older version multiple times. Seems to work fairly well. Gives them a good introduction.

Fun!!!! Games and interaction are key to keeping the youth interested. Lectures more than 25 minutes and you will lose them. Good luck

I got a copy of TLT and tried to talk our SM into offering it to the new leadership (elections were last week) on a weekend. He says it's a great idea, but let's do it over the next three meetings - 1 module each. All boys will be in attendance - not just the ones in POR. I guess that's better than not doing it at all. I just hope we can avoid FieldSports' caveat.

I wanted to do it so that our boys (translation: my son) would be eligible for NYLT, which is offered through our council each year at winter camp. Of course, that didn't stop the prior SM from signing off on the applications for three boys, including his own son, where the application for NYLT says that they've attended TLT. We've never offered it before.

I did that as part of my Wood Badge ticket in November 2007. The first time running it through was up at our local Scout Camp. It wasn't bad and I would recommend doing a TLT in a setting such as a campout (if you have the place for it). We have also done it this past Monday. We did it in a 3 hour session. Some of the stuff got old because the boys were cooped up for three hours. The biggest thing is the boys did learn from it. They got out of it that leadership is more than just a patch on your shoulder and their are responsibilities for being a leader.

We do this every year during October at a weekend campout. We make use of our Council Campground (lucky us to be only 12 miles away). We do everything that we can to make it mandatory without actually making it mandatory. Usually we have at least half of the troop attend. This year was pretty sad though, only one boy who had not taken it at least twice before showed up. It was still good for our ASPL and the other PL in attendance to refresh themselves. They also presented the program to and required that the adult leaders participate. Our boys have been doing more of this lately in an attempt to get more parental involvement. They select two leaders one week a month to advance the Flags at a Troop meeting, and even have purchased some spoof Merit Badges that they award at COH to the leaders such as Snoring. It does seem to be working, there is a little more parent involvement, even from some parents tat had not stepped inside the door in 3 years. Whatever it takes....
