2010 Jamboree Promo

Postby biglou » Mon Jan 05, 2009 6:04 pm

Ok, just wondering how many people have seen the Jamboree promo that National has for the local councils? I showed it to a bunch of boys this past weekend. I hate to say that is was more geared to 11 year olds then the older boys. Needless to say their opinon was that is was lame. That is being nice. I have seen better ones produced on youtube.

It makes some sense that they're targeting this toward the younger guys. With the Jambo still nearly two years away, the older ones may not be around for this event. National's probably doing focused group targeting at the most likely attendees.

We had no problem selling out 2.5 troops the first meeting. I do not understand the problem. Cost?

I think part of it may be cost. There are other issues at play too. I was just wondering what others had thought.

Greater Cleveland Council is sending 4 troops.
We have 131 boys signed up (each having paid $400 already).
Thirteen open slots.

All leader slots taken/filled.

Total cost (everything..including post-Jambo tour) is $1,600.

At $1600 I can see why it's full. Ours is $3500. Frankly, I could put together a much less expensive (and fuller) travel package than what our Council has. So, yes, cost is the MAJOR factor mine aren't going :-(.

Dont just look at the price because some have to travel a little farther then others. I think that travel might be a factor in the price also.

That's true, CBallman. But $1900 per Scout further? Part of it is that our Council used a professional tour service for a week's tour beforehand. Nobody needs that in DC, where most everything is free and accessible by Metro. Three of us recently returned from DC for a week (the Marine Corps Marathon). Total cost including hotels and flights was less than that. It's just a little disappointing for #1 who really wanted to go, but can't justify that kind of expenditure.

If your son will be 16 or older when the jamboree starts have him sign up for staff. 395 plus your transportation

I found the same problem in my local council. They send 20 troops for a 3-week trip including at-least 1 week of touring. The tours always include several nights at expensive hotels and eating at fancy restaurants. I don't consider that a part of scouting, and don't want my council dictating where/when I tour. I would much rather tour the eastern US at a time that 50000 scouts are at home.

I called my council office and talked to the Jamboree planners. I told them I wanted to go to Jamboree, but didn't want them to plan a vacation for me and didn't want them to spend my life savings. They said, 'Too Bad'. Even when I suggested that they were excluding boys who want to go, but can't spare that much time or money their answer didn't change. 'We have never had trouble filling our contingent.'

I called the 5 neighboring councils. They all said, 'We have always done it that way'. One did agree that there 'might' be some interrest in doing it the way I suggested and would offer for one of their contingent troops to do Jamboree only with no tour. I and my 2 sons are registered to attend Jamboree as a part of the Utah National Parks Council contingent. (Getting the National Jambo registration to go through to a council other than my own was a nightmare, but we got it to work.)

The western Action center is always looking for staff. Yes your son will work but 1. he will be there before the Jamboree so he gets all the good staff from the Trading post. And he will eat and sleep a whole lot better. ALdut staff is needed also in a big way.

And if you have any questions, feel free to fire away. I don't know if there's any other past youth staff members on here, but I went in 2005 as youth staff and I'll help with any questions you might have.
