New Idea to Find Adult Leadership

Postby ThunderingWind » Tue Feb 03, 2009 11:09 am

As mentioned in an otehr thread some councils have had a little trouble securing Adult leadership for the jamboree. Several reason have come including:
1) No interest or desire
2) Economy
3) Training Requirements (not wanting to do Woodbadge)
4) Tenure Requirements (needing to be an SM in he past three years).

Another idea was floated during a brain storming session.....

If an ASM applies to be a leader AND IS ALSO A CREW ADVISOR (not Associate Advisor), would National grant a waiver and allow this person to be one of the 1st ASMs or even the SM. Of course the committee would feel the Applicant is otherwise qualified except the SM Tenure. ASM has 5 years as ASM and 4 as Advisor plus one as Associate Advisor.

So, if "You Were King For The Day" would you allow this change? So you feel it is within the Spirit of Scouting?

If I were king for a day: If I did not get a enough volunteers meeting all requirements, I would make some kind of tiered approach & republish the requirements so all people meeting the new requirements would have a chance to apply. If not was not practical, I would make case by case exceptions using the most qualified available. Realize that this approach will insure that some will cry favoritism. As I said before, the current requirements seem to restricted to insure the leaders that have put the most into the program get the first shot so widening the pool can be done without really lowering the gene pool. Our council's adult contingent filled up early so the current set worked for us.

Disclosure: If I were king for a day, I would be attending to other things & delegate Jamboree issues.

In the real world, who ever is in charge of your council's contingent needs to talk to the Jamborre king for a day at national to find what exceptions are possible.

Here is a not so new idea. How about just flat out asking? We have done that in my Troop with some success with new adult leadership.
