Solar Power/Solar Panels

Are solar panels allowed at the jamboree? Looking at putting them on the dining flys for DC water heaters in addition to black bag water heaters.

We had one to charge staff cellphones! But it would never hurt to ask. Matter of fact I will checkon that today at the Area Meeting.

Just curious why the wouldn't be allowed? I am a firm believer in "it is easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission".

That is extremely poor management. I expect more from the senior leadership of the BSA.

But off I go to ask for "free" panels to go on our dining flys. A "thank you for the donation" sign will be on our entrance if we get them.

Sounds like i got the right answer then.

Actually,I don't think this is poor management. I have absolutely NO clue what goes into planning a Jambo but i would guess that it is way more work than anyone realizes. You take TW's question about solar panels and multiply it by 1000's of other random (but valid) questions and then think about what it takes to get answers for all of them. I doubt anyone makes a big deal of it if it is done in good taste and it doesn't detract from the event.

Actually, I would have thought the question of solar panels would be on the list of "Already Asked, Already Answered, and the Answer is....."

Many councils are still operating in the dark ages and the questions have not been asked. When you get your leaders guide see if they are listed a prohibited if not you are good to go.

I would be extremely disappointed and disillusioned if anything that was considered environmentally friendly was banned or discouraged by BSA. This type of thing (solar panels, wind generation, water generation) should be the norm for BSA activities, Scouts, and Scouters. Personally, I hope that when we get our own permanent Jambo location and they begin developement of the area there will me a maximum of earth friendly construction and infrastructure used. And to think, fifteen years ago my opinion was: Cut it down, make a board, and let me build something out of it!

Remote staff camps at philmont use solar cells for their electrical needs. They also use it on some of their well pumps in the back country. I find my wind generator a little heavy for back packing though I am told that I generate a lot of wind.

If you are ever at Prairie portage going into the Quetico, check out the micro hydro station powering the Canadian park ranger outpost.

Just curious about the cost of a solar cell. How much would one cost?
