Uniforming and the National Jamboree

Postby wagionvigil » Wed Feb 11, 2009 12:14 pm

On the yahoo Jamboree group there has been alot of discussion as to what is acceptable to wear at the national jamboree. For those that are going and those that are taking troops please take time to really read that part of the leaders guide. Basicially you are in the field uniform for shows and the evening meal or you are in a BSA activity uniform during the day. Several councils I know of are not allowing scouts to even take anything that would violate the rules. I applaud them. On this same note if a scout is not dressed correctly they very well may be denied to take part in an activity.Scout t shirt, Scout shorts and Socks. No socks no service. Baggy shorts no service, ACDC Tshirt no service. You get the drift. One council I know of that flew in went through the kids foot lockers upon arrival and sent home anything not scout related at the parents expense as they said they would.

Based on previous Jamboree's.......

How picky are the uniform police if we do not change our Unit Numbers?

Each Troop attending will be assigned a troop number which is required to be worn. Sorry. Your council will also Have Jamboree Council STrip and Your OA Lodge will have a Jamboree Pocket Flap

Is the OA flap going to be required? I am not sure if Ah'Tic is going to have one. I hope they do. Then again, I am going to have to pay my dues.

That going to be a lot of sewing for me........Dag nabit.
Take off current/old stuff, put on new stuff, go to Jamboree, take off Jambo stuff, put on unit stuff........

But seriously, what will they do? Stamp my meal card "No Desert?" Send me home? Make me stay in my Troop site during times I am supposed to wear it?

This surprises me. You are no longer a member of your home troop at the jamboree you are a member of the Jamboree Troop #Assigned to you. Remember the kids are expected to conform so what is good for the Goose as they say. The Troops at the Jamboree will be visited daily by a Troop Commissioner that person will have uniform inspections, camp site inspections etc. If a Soldier decided he did not want to change his insignia what would happen? The Word uniform means more than the cothing itself.

I accept this explaination.
I was under the impression that the Jamboree Unit Number was more for command and control and NOT uniforming. I know councils create new Council Strips for the Jamboree and they are collector items.

Personally, I had not planned on putting any of the Jamboree Council Strips on and save some time and uniform damage by not swapping them (twice).

Oh, well, I guess I will be buying a new shirt or two so I have the appropriate stuff.

In this tough economy, one would think that as long as the uniform is proper, it would be ok not to have the Jamboree stuff on it.

That unit number means a lot. Having it on the uniform helps to identify that Scout very quickly. Where does he belong? What subcamp, etc.

If something were to happen, how are the first responders going to know who to contact? Sure, they could look his name or his council up, but that would take time. They see that number on the uniform and they know exactly what subcamp to go to. And from there, the subcamp staff will be able to find the troop leaders.

Not to get into the uniform debate.

Most of the day scouts will be in an activity uniform which may or not have unit numbers on them. When the are in field uniform they are going to be generally with their troop? Evening meal & assemblies? I am guessing that they will be carrying ID with them. (Unless it has been taken away because they were not carrying water bottles with them & they have passed out from dehydration.)

I, too, thought that ID badge and barcode tattoo we are supposed to have on our foreheads (being silly with that one) covered all the ID requirements.

Oh, well.....I'll order a few shirts just for the jamboree.

You can wash out your shirts there. I will be there a week longer than you guys and will only take two shirts, 5 pair shorts,20 pair socks and 20 pair of under shorts and probably 10-15 scout t shirts plus some grubbys for set up. There is a PX on base at WIlcox that has underwear if needed and the bus does go there.

Big trade items for about 2 weeks. After that, having so many variations just devalues all of the CSPs or Lodge Flaps that have ever been produced in the lodge/council.

I have a 30th Aniversary Lodge flap that was produced by my lodge 20 years ago. They said, at the time, that this special edition patch would be worth $250 in a year or two. 20 years and 50 'special editions' later, the 30th Aniversay edition is still worth about $5.
