Didn't know that splitting the sites was an option. Been waiting for the announcement since December.

OK, what is the problem with the title I see above. Could it be the storms affecting things?

The Site In WV offers some of the best whitewater in the country. I am only 3 hours from Summersville and will head down there as soon as they identity the site.

I was hoping for a more centralized site. I had heard a site in Arkansas was considered, but didn't make final cut.

The entire process was handled very quietly, but some folks in WV were aware of the status and were anxiously awaiting the decision (which was originally scheduled for December, then later January).

The press release provided was great and locally there was an announcement on the evening news (although it seems that some of the details were garbled). I believe that the Governor of WV actually made the announcement. Nothing has been released from our Council - at least to the general volunteers - at this point.

As I understand it, the site is likely to incorporate climbing and hiking as well as whitewater. Still waiting for all the details to come out (and/or an opportunity to question some of the folks that have been deeply involved in the proposal).

I think the owners were trying to sell Nelson Rock Perserve at one time. Wouldnt it be cool if that got lumped into the BSA deal. Some of the best climbing in WV and they also have the Via Ferrata course. Wishful thinking.

Nelson Rocks is a bit furthur North. The area they seem to have settled on is Close to Oak Hill. That is along 19 South of the New River Bridge. There are a lot of outfitters in that area ACE/The Rivermen etc which merged into one big company last year I was told. I am hoping that the BSA hire outside of these outfitters and get real scouters on the Payroll.

Did they choose Goshen Scout Reservation to be the permanent Jamboree site? I saw that on the wikipedia that it was going to be near Goshen, Virginia. I will copy a portion of the article on the NSJ.

A decision was announced on Feb 11, 2009 that the future home of the National Jamboree will be located in Goshen Virginia and the new High Adventure Base would be located in Fayette and Raleigh Counties, West Virginia

Just curious.

Same here.. Feel sorry for all the western region Scouts that have travel completely across the continent.

I bet if you plotted the mean population center of BSA (Scouts only) membership it would fall somewhere certainly west of the Mississippi.
Last I heard the U.S. population center was in south/central Missouri.

A lot of the decision had to do with National Historic Sites within easy access. ALSO cost of preparing the site. Safety was another consideration. Tornado ALley, High Heat etc. They looked at a SIte In Arkanas and there was a problem with Military Ammunition removal. I believe it was a bombing range at one time?

We heard a rumor that the site of the Ravenna (OH) Arsenal was being considered.
Huge piece of land, near interstate highways, a major/hub airport (CLE - Continental).
However, something like 2 million artillery rounds were produced there during WWII.
