Advisor as a Jamboree Scoutmaster (1st Assistant)

Postby ThunderingWind » Sun Feb 22, 2009 6:37 pm

I got a call today giving me an update on the last days of the formal selection process. It would seem we are not done selecting leaders yet.

One question asked of me by the caller was if I knew of a waiver or approval to use my time as a Crew Advisor and Wood Badge this coming April so I could be a 1st Assistant Scoutmaster instead of a 2nd Assistant Scoutmaster.

I am fully qualified to be a 2nd Assistant Scoutmaster. I am currently serving in a Troop as an ASM. I am fully trained and will even have Wood Badge done even though it is not required.

It would seem we have enough men qualified to be the 2nd ASM, but need one more or at least want to interview more for the 1st ASM positions. I told the caller that I will srve wherever the Council asks as long as it meets the approval of National.

Not relevant to your situation but Woodbadge is required for Jambo 1st Assistant SM.

Are you saying that service time as a registered Advisor with a Crew counts the same a being a Scoutmaster with a Troop for the purposes of meeting the Jamboree Scoutmaster requirements?

If so, can you direct us all to any supporting documentation, please? The two guys on the committee are leaving to Germany for a week (actually left tonight). I do not think they asked any of our professionals to check.

But it was interesting that they asked. I guess I was being looked at for a 1st Assistant SM slot as I will have completed WB.

Understood. Maybe the committee was looking moving me up since I am an Advisor (nearly four years "in the chair" so to speak with two crews total) and I will ahve WB done.
