Wagion....I am still learning about Venturing, but have called and spoken to a Venturing Associate Advisor of a local crew. He is going to give this young man a call and invite him out.

I went by and picked up two Venturer handbooks...one for this young man and one for myself. I have been looking at all the links/information you had emailed me a few weeks ago and am going to learn about this program. I have been reading what is required for the Ranger Award and all I can say is "WOW"!!!!

Yep not easy. And the big thing I like is you must give back what you have learned.
Look at the First Aid requirement alone.

Wagionvigil, A true heart felt sorry that you had a bad experience.

My life experience involves an unprovoked assualt on me by an eagle scout (yes little "e" for this supposed eagle). The saga took a year of my life and enourmous stress on my whole family. No Council support. So, yes I have experienced it directly.

I make an active choice to risk getting burned again. My Grandfather (25 years as SM) and Father (Eagle and COR) told me it is better to risk it and get the ten wins and persevere through the one loss.

I will continue to encourage ALL leaders to do the same. However, I understand why other's may not choose this.

End of the day, this is a Win :D for Mike because he had a SM conference. Venture or ASM are all great routes.

Congrats! The young man made the right decision and the integrity of the Eagle Rank withheld the test of time again.

Boy, this thread has been dormant for a while. So, lets bring it to life again! I've been an Eagle Advisor in our council for over 17 years, and I've got a good one!

This young man earned his first class rank and his behavior went bad. He was put on probation by the troop, waited 4 - 6 months, straightened up and earned his Star rank. After a couple of months his bad habits reappeared, was put on probation again, and eventually earned his Life. Then he really went off the deep end: foul language, refused to wear his uniform to evening "colors" at camp, called his leaders names, fought with other scouts causing three of them to leave the troop, caused the leader who was the subject of name calling to leave, was hired and got thrown off camp staff, refused to participate in opening ceremonies at troop meetings, etc., etc., the list goes on.

His family was previously thrown out of another troop, and is now thrown out of his current troop. Why? He went to them with an Eagle Project, was told NO Way until you improve your behavior! He didn't and started his project anyway, without sponsor signature, SM signature, CC signature, and without my signature.

He has now gotten thrown out of this troop! He is in the process of applying to a third troop in hopes of getting around the "Scouting Way" of doing things. Wants all of his work on the project to count! Of course I said NO WAY! Do you believe this? WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Why is the council even allowing him to register?

Good question! But, they are dragging their feet and haven't allowed the paperwork to go through yet! Maybe they will, maybe they won't! They probably want the "numbers!" I'm going in to the SO tomorrow and will ask. To be continued!

The council is well aware of it. The troop that recently tossed him (and his father) has sent copies of all meeting notes of the meetings they had with them, and all committee meeting notes where his behavior was discussed, along with the summer camp director's evaluation and reasons for firing him from staff, to the Scout Exec.

I find it amazing it was dumped into my lap with a: "Maybe he will change in time" attuitude. He's only 14 and off to a real bad start!

He has no Eagle Project approval so anything he's started is all for nothing. The Eagle Scout Leadership Workbook is clear on this in two separate places.

Given his past performance, who in their right mind put him in a POR for Star or Life? Did they remove him or just let the time pass? What POR is he in now? Take him out now.

No Council needs numbers that bad.

What do you want the council to do that you can't do yourself? If you don't want a boy to join your unit, don't accept his membership application.

Joat: Not my unit! He's trying to get into another unit in the council. I'm just the Eagle advisor this boy recently contacted.
