Back from my first weekend of Wood Badge

Postby ThunderingWind » Sun Apr 19, 2009 7:27 pm

Back from my first weekend of Wood Badge. Interesting. Needs more balance between Cubs, Scouts, Varisty and Venturing if we truely are to be inclusive and diverse.
Not all of us are/were Scouts so we need time to develope the Scouting skills needed to complete the course.

But my Venturing knowldge helped crush our opponents in the Knowledge Bowl game.

Critter?

Also there was a Cub Scout Trainers Wood Badge that was done away with when they came with this new course. It was excellent.

OK...............I am a Bobwhite.

"It's ALL right when it's Bobwhite" & "Bobwhite's Leave No Trace"

We are very diverse Patrol. One Professional Scouter (a DE), me the Venturer, a cub leader (bear), and two ASMs, one older, one an Eagle that is about 27.

There are no jokes allowed about the Critter Assignments as it goes against the rules and policies of the BSA regarding hazing, teasing and non-scout like behavior.

If you do not have any thign nice to say, do not say it at all.

That is Part of Wood Badge. All the patrols are equal. We had a stag in our council and we have a OK Be Nice a kuku he did his in the UK. I have a friend that is a Raven which is not used any more. There have been Turkeys etc ove the years.

Unless you are an heard animal, teasing in good fun is part of team building & is a long way from hazing regardless what people in authority say. Besides I always been told bob white tastes like fox.

One of the skills you should be teaching your scouts is how to recognize when it stops being good fun & needs to stop.

Sad Note on this is the participants are being told in the new course that they are not allowed to discuss other patrols. :?

This is a Zero Tolerance course.

A cool thing is that we are learing some basic sign language because we have a hearing challenged student. We have an official Staff interpreter and one from
outside Scouting and one the students is also ASL fluent.

I have zero tolerance for zero tolerance. :) It is bad enough to have zero tolerance in schools though I can see why they have it. Scouting is all about teaching youth how to live in reality. But you have to live in your own life.

They're losing me on the logic on this one. There are many other examples of non-scout like behavior that need to be dealt with WAY before this one.

BSA HAZING POLICY:

Hazing prohibited. Physical hazing and initiations are prohibited and may not be included as part of any Scouting activity.

Do the WB patrols gnaw on each other? :)

Just to be clear....is an OA Ordeal an initiation or a non Scouting activity.

No "dinging" of other patrols????
Good grief !!!!!!!!!

Last August (2008) our C-13-08 Bear Patrol yell was (credit to WagionVigil):
"BEARS! Everything else is just a meal."

When I took wood badge some 4 years ago, picking on critters was discouraged by management. Just made it all the more fun. :)

This past weekend completed 2nd weekend of WB as member of QM's staff. Fox patrol yell was their one and only female patrol member yelling Foxy. Have fun during WB, but just like with at our youth you have to know when to draw the line.
